Last nights show was a real good one. At times it felt Stafford could blow the roof off the place. Oatts was a monster as described by "Free For All" especially on the uptempo numbers. I wasn't familiar with the other players in the band with the exception of David Wong on bass who I just happened to see play with Brian Lynch just over a month ago. All were quite good. The show was well attended for a Thursday night. Not a full house but a pretty decent crowd. I'm glad I was able to attend the show and would fully recommend to those who haven't seen Terell Stafford perform to check him out.

Thanks guys for the positive input. Unless something suddenly comes up, it looks like I'll be attending tomorrow nights show(Thursday). From what I understand Dick Oatts is playing with him. I've heard that's a good thing?

Happy Birthday, Dan!

Since this is an older thread I'm reviving, is Terrell still worth seeing? I have the opportunity to see him perform at a somewhat local venue 45 minutes away on Thursday night. While I'm at it, any thoughts on his more recent releases including his latest "This Side Of Strayhorn"?

We just had the power restored here this evening after nearly 5 days. We lost power at 6:45 am Sunday morning at the height of Irene. It was wicked. Very strong winds and heavy rains late Saturday night into early Sunday afternoon. I couldn't sleep at all Saturday night listening to what was happening outside. I actually had to turn on the air conditioner to drown out the sound! We were very fortunate that we only had water in the cellar which I spent a great part of Sunday bailing out. By the time the fire department arrived the water level was too low for them to pump the water out. The water receded overnight thankfully which no longer required any further action on my part. Alot of trees down in the area but none on my property. Things outside of town are a whole different story. In Rhinebeck across the river from me, the water system has been compromised. Water bottles have been imported to the towns residents. In the mountainous areas of the Catskills, there is some very serious devastation. Bridges and roads are washed out. According to a gentleman who works for the county highway department, 8 bridges are gone. Residents have lost homes, busineses washed out by the storm. Towns literally destroyed. Many trees are down cutting off people for some time. They say power in these areas might not be restored for 2 - 3 weeks. Again, I feel very fortunate when my only inconvienance was a power outage. Yeah, walking around in the dark and going out for meals for breakfast and dinner got old real quick. It's something I will never forget. I hope at this point to either volunteer and help some of these poor people in whatever capacity I can or at the very least donate to a relief effort. I feel at this point it's the least I can do.

Light rain and breeze right now, although things are expected to drastically deteriorate by morning. Thankfully no tornado watches or warnings in my area as of now.

On most occaions although I would be concerned, I probably wouldn't be too stressed about an oncoming storm. Except this time around besides looking after my own home, I'm also taking care of my mom's home. Her house is on the market and I really don't need any complications like a tree falling on the roof or the basement flooding. I refuse to watch the weather channel or any of the network broadcasts at this point. It's really upsetting me big time. I don't think I'll be getting much sleep the next 48 hours.

I'm concerned about down trees and power outages. You can only hope things turn out not as bad as the forecasters are calling for. That said, I'm getting prepared.

What live music are you going to see tonight?
Tom 1960 replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I had the good fortune last night to see Brian Lynch perform in a quartet at "The Falcon" a very cool club located in Marlboro, NY about 65 miles north of NY City. This is a fantastic place to see a show. The acoustics are great, the shows are well attended, a real positive vibe definitely goes down here. Besides Lynch, Herve Sellin was featured on piano, David Wong on bass and Bill Goodwin on drums. The theme of the evening was jazz influenced by French classical music. When I first heard of the theme of the evenings show, I was abit skeptical. I wasn't sure whether I would enjoy enjoy the show. I was proven wrong. It worked. Sellin who is the main influence here seems to be quite adept in his knowledge of French classical music. Sellin and Lynch collaborated to bring both genres together for a very interesting mix of highly entertaining music. Sellin also played with Johnny Griffin for a number of years, so there is no disputing his jazz creds here. Bill Goodwin was crackling on drums. I have to admit not knowing much about him, but he was exciting to watch behind the drum kit. Again, another fine show put on by Tony Falco and the folks at "The Falcon". If any of you guys are in the area, you defintely should check this place out. Greg Osby plays here next Saturday night and Terrell Stafford next month. There is no admission to get inside, although there is a donation box where folks can deposit what they feel is appropriate. I don't know how Tony does it, but he keeps booking acts. Dinner and drinks are served as well.
