  1. The Wess/Coles date sounds like an interesting one plus Kenny Barron to boot.
  2. My first thought when I read the thread title was that it was the dj. Same here although I remember when he worked at WABC/770 in New York. What do I know?
  3. Happy Birthday, Dave!
  4. That's pretty much where I'm at, too. Early on, it seemed like he was part of a back-to-basics movement in country. Now however, country is...well I don't know what the fuck it is. Dead silence is a hell of alot more appealing.
  5. Sorry for the delayed response, Bertrand. The show features music on the many sessions Joe is featured on. Hope you had the opportunity to listen in?
  6. WKCR, New York 2 PM - 7 PM eastern time zone
  7. Happy Birthday, Shawn!
  8. I had the good fortune recently to have picked up this release from a fellow board member. It's been on my wish list for quite some time, but never pulled the trigger. Gotta say this is a real nice session. Besides Shelly, Conte Candoli is on trumpet, Richie Kamuca on tenor, Russ Freeman on piano and Chuck Berghofer on bass. It was recorded in '61. The playing by all is quite good especially Kamuca and Freeman. I've listened to this several times the past few days and really glad to have this added to the Shelly Manne collection. An underrated date, IMO. A little gem. What say others? Any love for this recording? If you haven't played it in quite some time, dig it out and post your impressions later.
  9. WWOZ New Orleans the past 3 hours. Kind of forgotten what a cool station this is.
  10. Kenny Barron - New York Attitude http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94B_RtOIDlg
  11. Playing in my area August 11. Tickets range from $25 - $66. To be honest, I don't know much of the recent album. I probably should check out some of the online samples before making any sort of decision. I love Chris Potter and never seen him perform prior. What do you smart folks think? Pass or must go?
  12. A very nice session.
  13. I really enjoy Joe Cohn's 2011 release "Fuego".
  14. Boy, don't me started! As a few of the board members already know I've been obsessed with this label for close to a year now. Where do I start? Just about anything Melvin Rhyne recorded on the label is worth owning. I don't believe you'll get much argument from that. Alot of the Walt Weiskopf discs IMO are very good to excellent. Both Kenny Barron self led dates are quite good although I really enjoy "Green Chimneys". The Richard Wyand disc "Half And Half" is very nice. "Pharoah's Children" by J.D. Allen is excellent. The Ralph Lalama dates are all worthy of purchase. More later.
  15. PM on Red Mitchell self titled release on Bethlehem and Earl Hines Plays Duke Ellington.
  16. WBGO in Newark. I seem to find Sundays a good time to listen online when I'm working around the house. I have my Squeezebox Radio in the kitchen.
  17. PM on Shelly Manne "Checkmate".
  18. Thanks guys. Today was low key having had to work in the sweltering heat for nearly 10 hours. My wife made me a very nice dinner. She took me out last night to a real nice restaurant and the night before we were over at our friends house celebrating an early birthday. At this point i think 3 days worth of celebration is enough.

    Tim Warfield

Warfield was (and maybe still is) a member of Stafford's quintet. I saw them live and their music is well worth exploring. I concur with the remark above about Criss Cross. You just jarred my memory. I attended a Stafford show last year and instead of Warfield in the ensemble, Dick Oats sat in.

    Tim Warfield

I first became familiar with his playing via the album "Tough Young Tenors" released back in 1991. It also featured James Carter, Walter Blanding, Herb Harris and Todd Williams. Any thoughts on his solo issues or sideman dates? Anything worth purchasing? I see that Terell Stafford played on a few of his sessions which interests me.
  21. What I've heard through the grapevine relating to the streaming fees which were implemented months back, one of the underwriters who helped pay for the streaming costs in the past is no longer involved in the financing. At least that's what I was told by someone whom I would consider a reliable source.
  22. Funny. The stuff you can learn from this board!
  23. Nothing but good thoughts about Andy Griffith. He seemed like a genuine nice guy.
  24. Happy Birthday, Paps!
