  1. I would guess the chances of a Bill Barron Mosaic are probably pretty low at this point--and the Armstrong's undoubtedly in the mix because they feel confident that it would sell well. The "open house" does give me pause for concern, but perhaps it is simply a matter of looking to possibly close several years down the line, which wouldn't be surprising at all. Or they could simply need cash to move forward with the Armstrong and any other projects on the drawing board.
  2. Interested in the Fletcher Henderson and the forthcoming New Orleans box-set.
  3. Sad news, and yes, a big loss if it means the end of Uptown (David Sunenblick’s name appears on the new Serge Chaloff Rock Island 1953 release... perhaps he’ll at least carry through with whatever Bob might have had on the drawing board?). I’ve sung the praises of Uptown CDs numerous times on-air. Much appreciation to Mr. Sunenblick for expanding the discography of mid-20th-century jazz.
  4. Has anybody ever heard these two sessions? I went ahead and ordered the CD because I'm curious and I love Hodges, so... Johnny Hodges Buenos Aires Blues/Eleventh Hour The first album apparently came out at one time as Previously Unreleased Recordings and finds Hodges in the company of Lalo Schifrin, while the big band on Eleventh Hour is arranged and conducted by Oliver Nelson.
  5. I dipped pretty heavily into the Mosaic Mildred Bailey for my afternoon show today (the "classic jazz" Tuesday edition of the program), as I was paying tribute to the birth anniversaries of both her and Dexter Gordon. I inevitably pull out the Bailey set every several years for a thorough re-listening and ended up sending a note of appreciation to Scott, because I can't imagine any other label in the world ever issuing a Mildred Bailey collection done as well as this one was.
  6. Watching the first inning of Tigers-Yankees spring training game right now... so good to have baseball back!
  7. New music from Shane Butler of Quilt, via his group Olden Yolk--great video, too:
  8. Up today in honor of the 101st anniversary of Dameron's birth: Our Delight: The Music Of Tadd Dameron
  9. I was just thinking about this because I pulled my Bobby Hutcherson Select to use on the show today (for "Searchin' The Trane"). I really miss that series; the Hutcherson is one that I seem to return to every year or two. What were some of your favorites?
  10. Whatever its long-term implications (it actually seems like a pretty decent deal for the Red Sox from my perspective), don't you think it definitely makes the team stronger for 2018, filling the offensive hole that Ortiz's retirement had created? Maybe you get two prime years and then he opts out at age 32? Fans at Over The Monster seem pretty happy about it.
  11. It's also available as part of this three-album/2-CD set that BGO put out last year--an edition that does come with fairly extensive liner notes: Something's Coming/The Groovy Sound Of Music/The Time Machine Michael Cuscuna told me that they did indeed begin the planning for a Burton RCA set at one point, but that they were unable to secure the rights for it because Sony wanted a guaranteed number of sets that was higher than what Mosaic felt was financially viable.
  12. Five years/$110 million, with $50 million of that for the first two years, after which he can opt out: J.D. Martinez signs with Red Sox
  13. Do you know about this movement to get the Williamsburg Bridge renamed after you? I’m aware of it. How do you feel about that? Well, when I first began going up there, I found a spot on the bridge where I was unseen. Nobody riding on the subway could see me, and nobody driving in cars could see me. The boats down below couldn’t really see me either; I was hidden by the abutments from the bridge. I’m very flattered and appreciative, but I find the idea to want to name a place where I was trying to hide after me to be a bit funny.
  14. Hey, that's great news, Allen--thanks so much for posting. I'll be home from work by then and will try to tune in.
  15. We re-aired this program last week and it remains archived for online listening: Bob Porter's Portraits In Soul Jazz
  16. He was in quite briefly pre-Mobley, 1959, but was told by his probation officer that he couldn’t travel with the band. I’m pretty certain he at least played the French Lick jazz festival here in Indiana with Miles in late summer 1959. But was he also on board again at all during the undocumented 1962 J.J. Johnson period?
  17. Eric Hosmer signs 8-year $144 million deal with San Diego Padres I wonder if this will have any influence, one direction or another, on the J.D. Martinez-Boston Red Sox standoff.
  18. Talk about some early jazz! 😉 Archaeologists unearth mastodon-ivory trumpet
  19. Chronological Classics 1946-54 and Rhino’s Central Avenue Sounds box-set both list the bassist as Red Callender.
  20. Looks like Teddy Wilson has been pushed back to March as well. I agree that it's most likely nothing to worry about, but man, am I eager to dig into that Wilson set!
  21. Tom, here's a Night Lights show I did on the late 1960s/early 70s period: Ellington Ending: Duke Ellington 1967-73
  22. It sounds great, Allen, and congratulations on the NY Times notice. I was at JALC for the Jazz Congress last month and will be back in NYC in late April, wish I could catch your performance.
