  1. That the one with "Once Upon a Time in the Projects"? I had it on cassette...that dates me, doesn't it?
  2. A little Public Enemy (late period) stuck in my head this a.m.: He Got Game It's from 1998, well past their peak, but I remember quite clearly the visceral excitement of their first three records. Can't wait for the new 33 1/3 book about It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back.
  3. Yes, I think they went to an all-jazz format just a year ago or so and recently approached us about picking up the program. Unusual these days for a station to switch to all-jazz programming!
  4. If not mentioned already, Charles McPherson: McPherson's Mood $1.99
  5. A new station for Night Lights with a cinematic twist: Play Night Lights for Me
  6. A buck more ($4.99 plus three bucks shipping), but the KEEP ON A BLOWIN' Legends of Acid Jazz couples both the title LP and THUNDERBIRD: Keep On a Blowin' (Legends of Acid Jazz)
  7. Ken Nordine's last name? Nor-DEEN or Nor-DINE?
  8. Hard to tell from watching on TV this past season, but for me the new stadium doesn't quite have the mojo of the old one, in terms of how the loudness and the intensity of the crowd comes across. Some vintage Yankee Stadium highlights from the Jeter era: Brosius' game-tying HR in Game 5 of 2001 WS Jeter becomes Mr. November Yankees win 1996 WS (one of the most magical years in Yankee history) ...and pre-Jeter: Chris Chambliss runs for his life after walkoff HR defeats the Royals for 1976 AL championship
  9. Coupled together on the Prestige Willis CD LEGENDS OF ACID JAZZ, which Newbury's currently offering for $3.49 plus shipping.
  10. I'll double the rec for A TOUCH OF PEPPER. Probably going to use a cut off this for the upcoming Night Lights "Chicago Calling" sequel.
  11. Oh yes, I'd love to see that! This one here looks pretty good, and even though I have most or even all of it, it will be nice to have it all in one package, with the focus on Lucky in one of his prime periods! Same here, will be picking this one up as well.
  12. It came to $25 total, but still a grand bargain.
  13. Thanks, Chris--after wanting this for several years, I finally bit at the $17.95 price. Much appreciation for the tip.
  14. We re-aired The Wayne Shorter Songbook this past week and it is available for online listening.
  15. I don't have it, Bertrand--and while I don't treat the Penguin Guide as gospel, they give it 2 stars and say, "Despite the distinguished cast, a sad finale." I'm still a bit tempted to pick it up for only $5, however.
  16. Not reading yet, but I'm hearing good things about Adam Haslett's new novel, UNION ATLANTIC. I loved his short-story collection (YOU ARE NOT A STRANGER HERE), so I'll probably be checking this one out as well.
  17. And thanks for reminding me of WATERLAND--I've been wanting to read that book for years.
  18. He's coming to Indianapolis and Bloomington in April--I'm definitely going to the B-town show.
  19. My dad just sent me a link to this: Millennials Quiz I scored a 12, which places me solidly at the beginning of the Boomer generation...even though I was actually born at the start of Gen X.
  20. Tom, that's actually what ignited my most recent Neil Young kick. I taped an Afterglow recently that will air in a month or so and used two tracks off the new Locke; one of them was "Birds." I gave the CD to our weekday afternoon jazz DJ and he played that track too, just the other day. Any other jazz/popular-song-artist covers of Neil? There's Cassandra Wilson's "Harvest Moon," but I can't think of any others off the top of my head.
  21. Good one--I picked up several of those Zoot Pablos in the past year.
  22. Wow...I wish I was. (Esp. since it's in Holland--my mom's old stomping grounds at Hope College.)
  23. This past week's Night Lights show, Portraits of Harlem, is now up for online listening. It includes several rare 1939 and 1945 broadcast excerpts of James P. Johnson's Harlem Symphony, the entire 1963 recording of Duke Ellington's A Tone Parallel to Harlem with the Paris Symphony Orchestra, and more music from Benny Carter, Roy Eldridge, Clifford Thornton, Cab Calloway, Johnny Otis, Louis Armstrong and more. I also talk with John Howland, author of Ellington Uptown: Duke Ellington, James P. Johnson and the Birth of Concert Jazz. Portraits of Harlem Special thanks to rostasi.
