  1. Wow--the board crashed right before I went to bed last night, and evidently revived right before I came to work this morning. Good timing for me, anyway...
  2. Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis will be out shortly... B)
  3. I think we indie-pop lovers need our own "Funny Rat" thread...
  4. 23 year-old stoned-Ivy League-slackers. B) Not this Hoosier boy! Although I've always had a soft spot for pretty New England women with glasses who like to read.
  5. Yes, "Mote," of course--I couldn't remember the Ranaldo contribution to GOO, but that's only because it's been many moons since I listened to it. Another worthy LR song! I saw SY open for Neil Young on that tour. Now, I don't see anything strange about that pairing (hell, when Crazy Horse came out they sounded as if they'd been listening pretty intently to their warmup act), but the 10,000 aging hippies sitting around me sure thought it was bizarre, and responded by booing and heckling SY. "Where's Neil? Who the f#$@ are these guys? They don't even know how to play their f#I*ng instruments!" etc., etc. About 100 of us were there to see Sonic Youth--we could practically point one another out when we clapped at the end of each song. Hearing Kim Gordon scream "FUCK! The word is love" in a big arena during "Flower" alone was worth the price of admission for me.
  6. I have the Rykodisc box but haven't listened to it in a couple of years. Loved 'em... 23-year-old stoned-slacker summer music, and I mean that as a compliment. B)
  7. I like the one he did with Ran Blake.
  8. My first Braxton was one of the Delmarks (THREE COMPOSITIONS, I think) but what really opened the door was the WILISAU 1991 box. Call me crazy, call me off the wall... just don't call me while I'm listening to AB.
  9. I'm trying--trying--to hold off on the Farlow until the Herman comes out, so that I can order them together & save a bit on the shipping. On top of that, I just came across a "used" complete Billie Holiday on Verve that's in nearly mint condition, and I want to place a large Fantasy order before they're sold to Concord. Anybody got a spare grand to lend me?
  10. I read that a few years back Thurston sold all (most?) of his old punk vinyl and used the $$ to buy rare free jazz records. Yes, Thurston is way into free jazz and has made some records w/others in that vein. I used to be quite the SY head--in fact, one of my cats is named after Moore. (People always think he's named after Thurston Howell III. ) Got off the train around '93 or so, got back on when MURRAY STREET came out. You guys have piqued my interest, and I'll check out SONIC NURSE. IMO--granted, my 80s-indie roots make me a prejudiced party--it's a toss-up between BAD MOON RISING & EVOL when it comes to SY's greatest album. Maybe EVOL by a nose. SISTER is tremendous, and DAYDREAM, which has dated just a bit for me, is also very strong as well. GOO & DIRTY are more "mainstream," I suppose, but definitely worth picking up. They certainly retain the SY spirit. And yeah, I always listen for the one Lee Ranaldo song--I love 'em! "In the Kingdom #19," "Pipeline/Kill Time," "Eric's Trip," "Wish Fulfillment"--also "Genetic," a DIRTY b-side which I think made the new deluxe edition. His songs are always trippy/mystical--he's the George Harrison of Sonic Youth (guess that makes Kim John Lennon, and Thurston a cross between Paul & Ringo... B) ) Speaking of George, anybody ever hear SY's cover of "Within You Without You" for a 1988 British charity LP, SERGEANT PEPPER KNEW OUR FATHERS? Incredible!
  11. I've wanted to pick this one up for a long time... I'll look for your name when I do.
  12. My Riverside LP of George Russell's 'Stratusphunk' has indeed liner notes by Chris Albertson I just got David Young and David Baker to both autography my CD of it... didn't realize that Chris wrote the liner notes, as I haven't read them in a long time! Just makes it that much cooler. I'm about to start writing liner notes for a 2-CD anthology of Indiana jazz that I'm putting together, and I'm a bit nervous about it... so Organissimo is a good place for me to hang out, surrounded by all these talented vets.
  13. That's great news if the Mulligan set is doing so well; didn't Cuscuna say they'd look into releasing some of the live material if this one succeeded? Hey Wesbed, the New Orleans set appears to finally be gone! Glad I got one.
  14. I love this album! Drake's solo during the title track always makes me stop and listen a second time. As much as I enjoy hearing Drake with Brotzmann, it is nice to hear him stretch out with someone different. Another great disc is his duo with Borah Bergman on Soul Note. This disc doesn't seem to get a lot of mention but it is fantastic! I don't know of any other Drake / pianist duets off the top of my head, which is too bad. This disc smokes! Thanks for the rec, John B... got a PM from another member who really liked it as well. I'm such a Drake junkie that I wasn't too worried about buying it... also like McPhee a great deal. Looking forward to giving it a listen when I get home tonight. That R. Blake CD sounds good, too--I'll keep an eye out for it.
  15. Joe McPhee/Hamid Drake, EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION (used) Gil Evans, THERE COMES A TIME (used) Louis Armstrong/Duke Ellington, PARIS BLUES (is this OOP?)
  16. Anybody continuing to have problems with e-mail? Another board member tried to contact me through the e-mail option, and I never received the messages...
  17. They are. I got to interview him last year when he played Bear's Place here in Bloomington; cool guy. Only had enough time to talk about his Indpls. experience, but I think our regular jazz DJ got to chat w/him about recording w/Freddie & Coltrane. He also goes by the name Killer Ray Appleton.
  18. Man, if Contreras starts pitching like this consistently now that his family's here... look out, major leagues! ContrerasW8-1
  19. Hmmm... hadn't heard this about Brooks, but I don't know enough to say one way or the other. Certainly have heard it about Orrin Keepnews, though!
  20. Yep, I ordered that one last week, Mobleytime... it will make the cut.
  21. Brooks did a lot of work on the recent 3-CD Jack Purvis set, which is just a treasure trove for those of us with a yen for the mystery man from Kokomo.
  22. That's an amazing story, Chris! I'd love to hear that coin-machine recording... wow.
  23. Thanks for the tip, Brownie. Does she talk much about her life and/or her music on it?
