Looking these over makes me wish yet again that Mosaic would finally get around to the long-promised Capitol Big Bands box. A lot of interesting material sitting there in the vaults, even if you discount the Benny Carter and Cootie Williams (already released on the Capitol Jazz box).

Yes, the album will definitely be part of the Mosaic Select that's forthcoming at the end of March. I know many here are wary of Ron McMaster's audio work, and he's had a hand in a number of the Selects--so you might want to go for a Japanese version if you're in the anti-McMaster camp. (Assuming he's doing the Reece set.)

The Artie Shaw 1944-45 3-CD set is not to be missed. What a band! And Francois is right on about Sam Donahue--I recently picked up all four of the Heps, and that was one underrated outfit. I've never been a label completist before--not even with Mosaic--but I love what Hep puts out so much that I just might try to eventually snap up everything they've ever released on CD. Is the Teddy Hill still available? Worlds Records doesn't seem to have that one, and I'd really like to find it--early Diz and all that.

Yes, you can. I got it about a year and a half ago--it's one of their "on-demand" titles, I believe, and you'll also get a copy of the liner notes. Grant Green and Budd Johnson appear on a couple of tracks as well. As sacred jazz it predates Ellington's concert by a couple of years (though I don't want to venture into saying that it's the first example of it--there's some debate about that, and you could probably argue that "Come Sunday" set aside by itself is the first example). Great stuff, esp. for Mary Lou fans; hopefully some more of her scattered 1950s and 60s material will make its way onto CD.

Heresy, brothers and sisters, heresy is what I'm guilty of. I've lately begun to enjoy the sound of electric piano in both 1970s and more recent jazz--enjoying it as a texture, as it were. (Listening to Uri Caine on the latest Dave Douglas CD, as well as some late-70's J.J. Johnson material, is what brought on this post.) For most of my relatively brief (8-9 years) jazz listening career, I've absolutely loathed hearing an electric piano on jazz albums. (Outside of the electric-Miles canon, where for some reason I more grudgingly accepted it.) It strikes me now as a rather close-minded attitude, although I'm still far more partial to acoustic pianos. Any thoughts on this subject? Any recommendations for really good jazz electric piano? Joe Milazzo once made reference to a Bill Evans album, but I can't recall which one now--perhaps the Columbia LP that he did.

Ain't I a hopeless romantic? I asked for two Rhino Handmades: Jimmy Scott's FALLING IN LOVE IS WONDERFUL (well, hey, there you go!) and Percy Mayfield's Tangerine recordings. Thanks to my wonderful wife, a package from Rhino arrived yesterday--but I'm not allowed to open it till Feb. 14. Of course I could say, "You know, that Jimmy Scott album is supposed to be pretty sweet on the ears for lovers..."

I passed on a used copy of the Carter in an Ann Arbor shop several years ago--in anticipation of the Mosaic set--and am still kicking myself for having done so. I have the Hawk, Tristano, and Prez material on CD. Still hoping for a fullblown version of the box on Mosaic rather than Selects, but whatever they can put out will be greatly appreciated by many of us, I'm sure. Didn't Keynote also record some folk, too? I'm assuming that wasn't part of the LP box--just a side curiosity of mine.

I think the domestic version is OOP, but I picked up the old import version as a markdown at a Jazz Record Mart sale not too long ago... they might still have a few copies kicking around.
