Pricing on Freeman?

Just home quickly from work now, but will be placing an order later tonight. I'll check back in the thread for pricing.

Happy Birthday, Magnificent Goldberg!

Happy birthday MG! -
Well, Jim of course can speak to that if he chooses, but I'd say that's a safe assumption. I'd be surprised if anyone concluded he was turfed out for his political views -- whatever they were.
-
Maybe I never stumbled into the right threads, but I rarely read any comments from him about music. Mosaic thread once in a while was about it. He pretty much set up as a squatter in the political threads, from what I can tell.

Happy birthday Brad!

If you find yourself thinking about the politics of avatars, you should probably turn the computer off and go outside. EDIT: On the other hand, there is a "Sexy Trees" thread here, so who am I to judge?

Bucs are awful. They've pretty much run out of players who have some remote idea about how to play QB. It's week 4. ... Snap-and-panic seems to be the offensive scheme. They might as well go to the Wildcat, triple-option deal. 0-16 may be possible. Creamsicle anyone?

Stoops and Kiffin lose on the same day. Good day. And my USF Bulls are 5-0, with a freshman quarterback who looks like he'll provide some excitement for the next few years. No. 10 Cincinnati is up next. I think it's in Tampa.

I, too, tend to gravitate toward the smaller-group stuff that he was doing in the mid- to late '90s and earlier this decade. I listened to and watched the youtube clip of 'The Presidents' from this new release and enjoyed it. Interested enough to probably check out the whole album at some point. I think of big band music as dynamic, dramatic, emphatic, with a lot of horsepower and someone able to harness it. I didn't really get that sense listening to 'Presidents.' And in all likelihood that wasn't his intent -- just my own bias when it comes to listening to larger bands. Loved the tuba though!

Happy birthday Ken Dryden.

David Letterman Confession: I Had Sex
papsrus replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Well, there seems to have been a crime here, but Letterman didn't commit it. He had a relationship with at least one subordinate. I guess he indicated there's more. Never a good idea at work. And he has left the company he works for open to lawsuits from other employees over the perception -- real or imagined -- that he granted favoritism in exchange for sex. That could be a problem. Reminds me of George Costanza's response after his boss finds out he diddled the cleaning woman: -
I didn't buy any music today, which was something of a personal breakthrough since I spent a good half hour leafing through the used racks at Sound Exchange in Tampa this afternoon.

This is not good news.

Well, on the bright side, the Orioles are going to call Sarasota their new spring training home for the next X-number of years. Can't hardly wait for those Pirates-O's showdowns come March. :blush2: In 2007, the Rays blew a LOT of late-inning leads. Last year, the reverse -- they were winning games in the late innings. Had what seemed like a dozen or more walk-off wins. This year, back to blowing a lot of late-inning leads. They actually have a nice home record this year -- (50-27) which is as good or better than any division leader in baseball outside the AL East. Sucked on the road.
-
Hey! Some of you guys bin hatin' on the Rays a little bit while I'm gone? Nothing like the steam some other clubs get, but ... Last year was a magic run. At least now they're a reasonably competitive and entertaining club with some upside, which is a far sight from what they used to be. Bullpen. Nuff said. BoSox -- Dan, wtf? Are they going to make any noise in the playoffs? Yankees -- Yikes! Angels -- Like 'em Cards -- Scary Dodgers -- Not scary Dark horses anyone?

Pop / rock songs jazzified -- the best (and the worst)?

Bad Plus -- Everybody Wants to Rule the World -
I'm tempted. But with the car in the shop, just trying to hit my monthly budget for once. btw, googled ART ENSEMBLE 1967/ 68 NESSA and up popped a nice comment on this at Do The Math (I assume by Iverson), including a list (not completely up-to-date, I'm sure) of everything Chuck has ever put out.

Not laughing here. I have three.

L.A. Independent Record Shop Is Still In The Groove
papsrus replied to Tom 1960's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I'm sure you're right about downloads eating into the sale of CDs and vinyl, even in somewhat of a niche market like historical/rare recordings. I envision some little hole in the wall packed to the rafters with recordings, open 365. Low overhead, low margins. Basically a place to hang out and share music at a reasonable price. Maybe a little lounge with a coffee and donut operation in the back. The last used CD place here that I know of went out of business about a year ago. Their inventory was much broader though, mostly rock 'n' roll, pop, some jazz and what seemed to me like a decent selection of blues. Most of their inventory seemed to be stuff that was readily available online, and generally not first-choice stuff. There's a little place squeezed into an old, small strip mall near where I live that rents DVDs. They charge $2.50 for three days rental. They don't have much in the way of new releases. But what they do have is a ton of foreign films, sci-fi, cult films, a lot of classic American films, even a nice selection of jazz DVDs. Stuff you're not going to find in Blockbuster, or even Netflix, I'd wager. The place has been run by the same guy for as long as I can remember. Customers know the guy behind the counter by name, and can give him a general idea of the kind of film they're looking for and he'll offer recommendations. Real knowledgeable. That's kind of the thing I had in mind. The 'real knowledgeable' part is the hangup. -
Does anyone recall this science fiction story?
papsrus replied to Larry Kart's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
As I'm not much of a science fiction buff, he would have been my first guess. -
They had a "cash for clunkers" federal program over the summer, but it has expired. The gas mileage on my Miata is very good (when it's running), so it wouldn't have qualified under that program, which was designed to get people to trade in their gas-guzzlers for new, fuel efficient vehicles. Otherwise, I think it's left to individual auto dealerships to devise their own trade-in deals.

L.A. Independent Record Shop Is Still In The Groove
papsrus replied to Tom 1960's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I think my dream job would be to run a CD/vinyl shop focused on jazz/rare recordings. Online presence as well, of course. Just need an experienced, well-connected buyer for inventory. (sigh) The other option is a donut shop called "Go-Nuts Donuts." The absolute best donuts in town, the place to go for donuts, and great coffee only. Nothing else. The place everybody goes to on their way to work. Downside with that is it figures to be about a 4 a.m. to lunchtime gig. Not exactly my forte. (The donuts would offset that). -
The number of CDs in your collection exceeds what your enjoyment of that artist would warrant. Oh well, us poooor people don't have that problem Now, if you ask who's UNDER-represented in my collection... It's be the same list except Grant Green wouldn't be in there MG MG, I didn't see Grant Green on your list. I surmised that he's been on fewer than 40 releases. Sonny Stitt 77 Jack McDuff 61 Jimmy Smith 60 Gene Ammons 58 Houston Person 58 Jimmy McGriff 55 Stanley Turrentine 54 Lou Donaldson 49 Les McCann 48 Willis Jackson 46 Charles Earland 44 Hank Crawford 41 Groove Holmes 41 David Newman 41 Shirley Scott 40
