  1. Didn't this band play in London minus Cat Anderson? I'm sure I saw this line up.
  2. Happy Birthday Larry
  3. I let him down gently!
  4. What a shame. The jackets are probably unsalvagable. I had a problem with mold through storing records unplayed for years in the damp cellar at my old house. I found that it comes off easily by washing with cold water and wiping dry with soft paper towels. I used kitchen towels. If really bad a second wash was sometimes needed.
  5. Many happy returns, have a great day.
  6. What's missing? It includes all the Fantasy stuff except the alternate take of A Long Drink of the Blues plus "The New Tradition" (aka Presenting Jackie McLean) and Fat Jazz. I ordered it since I have all the Fantasy material as eMusic mp3s and would like to have it all on CD as well (plus I own none of the AdLib/Jubliee albums).
  7. I'll own up to just getting this one. Nicely presented and with good sound but the notes aren't up to much but the music's fine and shouldn't be overlooked. Shame it's not quite complete though.

    Rod Levitt RIP

Sad news indeed. Definitely time to get the RCA albums out.

Thanks for posting. MIght even help to convert the non believers.

Who is playing with him? Ronald, I've lost the quote but if I remember correctly it's a quartet date with Lafayette Gilchrist, Andrew Cyrille, can't recall the bass player and, added on some(?) tracks I think, Cassandra Wilson!

The new cd 'Sacred Ground' is out on 26 June and available for pre-order from CD universe.
  12. Nice background music. Problem is that titles, artists are often not mentioned - at least not when I've been listening. Neither are soloists. I would have thought that this information was essential on a JAZZ programme. Also presenters never comment or enthuse about the tracks they are playing. I suspect they are subject to a playlist, know little about what they are playing and are relying on a computer screen for basic information. Like Adrian, I'm not holding my breath.
  13. Thanks for posting Brownie, one to add the library.

    David Murray

I've seen Murray on most of his UK visits (trio, quartet, quintet, octet, gokwa, big bands). Musically he's always been very impressive and generally seems to want to play. There was only one occasion when he seemed less than happy - that was at a festival, notorious for its short sets, with his all star 'Ellington' big band. Stunning music that was over almost as soon as it began. Maybe it was the just short set, who knows, but he was definitely less than happy on that occasion.

Still my favourite - new cd out in June.
  16. Jon Faddis and Billy Harper; Jon & Billy
  17. Bang and Lowe, a great pairing. They toured the UK as the Jazz Doctors in the seventies(?).
  18. Bob Stewart is awesome. When he was with Brass Fantasy you just had to admie him and wonder where he got the energy from. But with Blythe, I've never found him completely satisfying. His best for me is Lenox Avenue Breakdown. A great recording by any standards.
  19. I happened to be in London when it came out. I still have that HMV Kulu Se Mama. Cover, labels even masters stamps on both sides of the vinyl indicate 'Kulu Se Mama'. The music inside is OMy god! I had one of those too. Pretty strange! Got mine on the day of release. They were withdrawn after a day or so.

    The DIW label

David Murray famously recorded numerous albums on the label often released in threes! Last time I looked Cadence are still listing a few DIW titles.
  21. Very tasty set, although I can't boast a Japanese issue. As I recall the Euro cd is sounds okay to me.
  22. I like Kikuchi's minimalist playing with Tethered Moon. The partnership with Motian and Peacock is splendid. All their cds are worth checking out, they tackle some intersting material (Piaf, Tosca, Weill). Could do with a little less groaning though. Odd the omission from the Penguin Gude. Now if he were Scandinavian ......
  23. I'm not a great fan of the 'beautiful game' but Ball seemed a nice guy. A loss to football.
  24. Thanks for posting Kyo, I was beginning to think aotw had finally run out of steam. A fine record, and the first aotw Hubbard as far as I can see. This was one of those that was hard to find in the vinyl era and was on my wants list for years before I found one. Concur about Clifford Jarvis.

    Vernon Story

Thanks for that Brownie, it's only the second photo I've seen from the tour.
