    Vernon Story

His claim to fame is touring France with the Rex Stewart Band in 1948, getting in some fine tenor solos on the several recordings made during the visit. Sadly Vernon died at age 84 yesterday in California. Until a couple of years ago Verrnon had no idea the recordings had been reissued and the nice thing was that my brother-in-law (he's married to Vernon's daughter) was able to get the records and reintroduce him to them. He was delighted to know that his music was out there and he was still remembered.
  2. Happy Birthday Mark. Appreciate the pictures. Keep them coming.
  3. Very sad news. One of the greats.
  4. I can also recommend this book. One of the best jazz books I've read. Almost every page made me want to pull out the records.
  5. Happy Birthday!!!

    IKE QUEBEC

Congo Lament gets the most plays here.
  7. I'm a fan too, I have several, mostly the early vinyl reissues.
  8. The Lonehill set is very nice. I wouldn't think twice about it.
  9. I'm sure it's a good listen, but with a half dozen or more on my shelf I ahve to ask myself, do I want another.
  10. Have a very Happy Birthday - and many more
  11. I'm very, very impressed.

    Keith Jarrett

I still have the double vinyl (Is it all on the cd?). It's not my favourite Jarrett but it has a permanent place in my collection
  13. Happy Birthday Claude
  14. Soundwise the Lonehill set is fine and very good value. That would be my choice. I can't afford too many scruples these days.
  15. True, but it's the Prestige Jam Sessions that I keep going back to.
  16. Just played the Quintet tracks again. Stunning stuff. Harden's compositions are great, and he has a lovely tone. Coltrane sounds as good as he gets at this period. Can't fault the rhythm team, Watkins especially is spot on. Fabulous music

    Tony Scott RIP

Sad news. I'll remember him more for his big gutsy baritone rather than a clarinet player.
  18. All DSM's cover art appears in this book - probably hard to find now.
  19. Very nice, thanks for posting
  20. Marsh and Konitz come to mind first.
  21. Can't recall any Imulse albums from Philips. Early Impulse albums were imports into the UK from the US. Later, US jackets were used with French pressings. EMI also issued many Impulse albums using original cover art but not the gatefold sleeves.
  22. On our last trip to the US (last Autumn) we rented a Toyota Highlander. We did about 2000 miles around New Mexico and Arizona. This was my first experience of a hybrid and I was a very impressed by the car. From this limited experience I'm sure it wasn't that ecomomical on the highway. Didn't really get a chance to evaluate it's city driving ecomomy. But as car, definitely recommended. High drool factor.
  23. You are there Phil. Two FSNt cds, ***(*) for Sweet Transients and **** for Playful Intentions.
