  1. Nice choice, fortunately I have the lp.
  2. Tricky, I voted for the Prestige box but then I wouldn't want to be with out the Village Vanguard and Heavyweight Champion sets.
  3. I think Spence was purely a commercial arranger. The nearest he came to jazz were a few jazz-lite big band arrangements in the 60s if I remeber correctly.
  4. I agree "Love Letters" is splendid. I've played it more anything else recently.
  5. I've always found Redman as a leader rather disappointing. He always sounds far more interesting to me as a sideman.
  6. London reached 100 yesterday.
  7. This morning Joe Lovano; On This Day At The Vanguard Jazz Crusaders; Chile Con Soul
  8. I'm another old fart. If someone has been to to the UK since 1958 chances are I've seen them. The only notable omission is John Coltrane, I found out about his London concert the following day. Notable performances that come to mind include Miles Davis Duke Ellington Archie Shepp Ornette Coleman Albert Ayler AEOC Ray Anderson David Murray Henry Threadgill Joe Lovano John Scofiield Gil Evans Andrew Hill Gerry Hemingway Sun Ra
  9. There was a French Musidisc cd of the America material. I guess this was about five years ago, wasn't around for very long. I agree, the music's superb. In Paul Bley's book he says he had hours of tapes from the Hillcrest Club but sold them as blank to get money to move east! There's also some Ornette live at Lennox, Itmight have been on a Royal Jazz lp. There's some fascinating stuff there too though I've only heard one track on a radio broadcast.
  10. I've gone for "Good Bait", but any of the compositions on Mating Call could be there just as well. Mating Call is one of my favouite albums. I can always find something new on it.
  11. Trane still has the biggest influence, then perhaps Brecker.
  12. Thanks Simon, I've been meaning to find the video for months. No excuse for not doing so apart from idleness.
  13. Donald Byrd/Kenny Burrell; All Day Long (ZYX remaster) Roy Haynes; Love Letters (A surprisingly good cd)
  14. I've not seen the new "Solaris", haven't seen the old one for years but desperate to see "Stalker" again.
  15. I guess I'd call mine "weathered".
  16. As I recall the early 70's were deadly dull, fusion, electric everything then around 1976 it all took off with the first Black Saint recordings, David Murray's first recordings, Wildflowers etc etc. Boy! were we ready for it when it happened. For me it was like a rebirth. Most US labels at the time were, with some exceptions, were mired in mediocrity.
  17. I love the trombone so I'm slightly biased, but Griffin is a fine player. Unfortunately I've not heard the Trident album. He ws in the UK with Abdullah Ibrahim in the late 80s and it was good to hear him live. He's on Ibrahim's Blackhawk album "Ekaya" Dick's also on the two rather neglected (imo) Hilton Ruiz Group cds, featuring Sam Rivers, on RCA.
  18. Okay this pm and yesterday pm (British summer time)
  19. John Tchicai playing with Cadentia Nova Danica in London, 1968

    Donald Byrd

Definitely, this is what I call JAZZ
  21. I love them all, "Silent Way has to near the top but I've gone for the "With Coltrane"
  22. Finishing off the month with Woody Shaw; Live Vol 3 Sonny Stitt; New York Jazz Sonny Stitt and Bennie Green; My Main Man (vinyl)

    Donald Byrd

Hey, no-ones mentioned Byrd's albums on Savoy. The best, and most of my favouirite early Byrd is there.
  24. Now sold, thanks to those who showed an interest.
  25. Everything Lon says is right. I had most of this on vinyl for years and always loved it. Great music, every bit is worthwhile.
