  1. Haven't played Blues Bag in years. I'll dust off my Affinity album and give it a spin.
  2. I've nothing much against Fresh Sound but they have used this ploy before, reissueing a an available cd with extra tracks, Teddy Charles mentioned elsewhere here is an example. Looking at the Guys and Dolls lineup I wouldn't mind giving it a listen but I'm not sure I want to buy Something Blue again. Nevertheless I'd be interested to hear comments about th GUys and Dolls album.
  3. It's not listed on the publishers website so perhaps the 2012 date bis right. Inceidentally I went to a talk by the author around the time the cd came out. If I remember correctly he worked for the British Library and had access to all manner of archive material.
  4. Same here. Plus they only offered an air mail service to Europe putting up the price even more. Still I'm sorry to see it go.
  5. Carey's list were really mouthwatering at the time.
  6. Never was there (before my time ...) but that description somehow sounds very much like what I remember of my visits to Dobell's on Charing Cross Road in 1975/76/77. Dobell's was big compared to Carey's Steve, it was like being in a large telephone booth. For those of you who remember Chrsi Wellard and his New Cross shop here's picture I too back in the day. Chris is on the left. Sadly I've forgotten the name of his colleague here.
  7. I got some nice things from Dave Carey's. The customer area was tiny, two were a crowd but they had a lot of good things and were extremely knowledgeable. Unfortunately it wasn't the easiest place to get to from where I lived in Kent. Re I remeber buying Sun Ra's Heliocentric Worlds Vol 2 there as well as Ornette at the Golden Circle.
  8. Yes, Chris, a great guy and the shop a haven for collectors and musicians in SE London. He used to run an excellent record recital club in the pub opposite the shop. If I can find a photo of Chris outside the shop I'll post it.
  9. Certainly dense for Mulligan. I'll be following that up with Phil Sunkel's Jazz Concerto Grosso with Mulligan and Brookmeyer.
  10. Yes, I love them too. My kind of music.
  11. Max Roach; Speak Brother Speak. French America Issue.
  12. In fifty years of listening I've found that most of the music I wanted to hear has come my way one way or another - via friends, reissues and perhaps most importantly the kindness of members of this board.
  13. Not certain but after seeing the Solitaire logo that these were budget releases in soft card jackets. There may have been EPs too.
  14. I've just compared Wrinkles on my Japanese vinyl copy of this album which presumably reissues the original Vee Jay album with the sample on Amazon UK downloadf. The piano intro on the lp is much longer than the MP3 sample. Anyone have any information on alternates from this session perhaps from the Mosaic Chambers/Kelly box. Thanks in advance. John
  15. Vee Jay (Japan)
  16. Art Pepper; The Great Lie. From Chet Baker/Art Pepper The Route on Pacific Jazz. Art with just Leroy Vinnegar and Stan Levey in 1956. Nice to (re)discover an overlooked or just forgotten gem.
  17. I've never come across these before. Good to see them.
  18. Exactly right and nicely put. Like Vic I'm not so young any more and can never play all that I have. Admitedly the sound of surprise is less these days but I still look for it. My buying has changed with age, I'm much less adventurous in my buying choices and buy far less.
  19. Looking forward to this disc. I've just booked to see him when he tours with US5 in March. I imagine he'll be featuring this album at the gigs,
  20. HERE. That's about it.

    Hank Mobley

I like these discs. I've had the Vogue double and the Fresh Sound cds. The sound is not the greatest on these issues but it is listenable so I wont be upgrading. Incidentally the dates are listed in Lord.
  22. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!
