  1. Who all is on it? When was it recorded/released? Can't find it at jazzdisco.org. Sorry it took me awhile to resond, but I was in Chicago for a few days. The cd came out in 1992 and was recorded in LA in 10/65. The full title of the disk is "Gil Fuller and the Monterey Jazz Festival Orchestra featuring Dizzy Gillespie," but Blue Note must've thought that putting Dizzy's name first and "Blue Note" on the spine would be more eye catching and sell more cds. Here's the band: Gill Fuller arrang-cond Dizzy Gillespie/Freddie Hill/Harry Eddison/Melvin Moore/John Audino-trumpets Lester Robinson/Francis Fitzpatrick/Jim Amlotte-Trombones Herman Lebow/Sam Cassino/David Duke/Alan Robinson-french horns Buddy Collette/Gabe Baltazar/Bill Green/Carrington Visor Jr/Jack Nimitz-reeds Dennis Budimir-guitar Phil Moore III-piano Jimmy Bond-bass Earl Palmer-drums Tunes are: 1. Man from Monterey 2.Angel City 3Love Theme from the Sandpiper 4.Groovin' High 5. Be's That Way 6.Big Sur 7. Moontide 8.Things Are Here Hope that helps edit to say I forgot to mention that this is a Pacific Jazz release.
  2. Please excuse my laziness to go through 10 pages and look, but what does "SOTT" stand for (I figured out "Medina" )?
  3. You won't be disappointed
  4. Nice haul from Reckless Records (Milwaukee location) when I was in Chicago over the weekend, all used and nothing over $9.99: Roland Kirk-The Inflated Tear-Rhino/Atlantic Deluxe Edition Andrew Hill-Pax-BN Conn Howard McGhee-Dusty Blue-Bethlehen/WEA Avenue Jazz Gary Burton/Sonny Rollins/Clark Terry-3 In Jazz-RCA Booker Ervin-That's It!-Candid Jaki Byard-Blues for Smoke-Candid William Parker/In Order to Survive-Compassion Seizes Bed-Stuy-Homestead Records Anthony Braxton & Gino Robair-Duets 1987-Music and Arts
  5. marred indeed! They did the same thing with this Johnson/Winding cover:
  6. Now that Organissimo is going to survive, I thought that it would be nice to say thanks, and what the board has done for me. Although I was with the old BNBB (and I didn't really post much there) and pretty much lurked here for years before joining, I have learned a great deal about jazz from this board. So, my appreciation starts with the Organissimo BB turning me on to organ jazz, largely from the postings of Soulstream. I now count Big John Patton and Larry Young as some of my favorite artists. Also, I started listening more to electric jazz, thanks to a number of threads on electric Miles and so forth. I now count Bitches Brew, In a Silent Way and his live albums from this period as some of my favorite Miles. If it wasn't for this board, I'd probably still wouldn't listen to anything past Sorcerer if it wasn't for the open-minded views here. Even recently, if it wasn't for a thread I started on British Columbia jazz reissues, I would've never learned about such artists as Ray Russell, and another kind board member that told me where to find an Oxley title from that same series. So I just want to say thanks to this board, the best jazz board on the web.
  7. That be pretty funny
  8. I plan to get deeper into Bach - at the keyboard (which I learn very, very slowly). Yes, Bach's later works are especially excellent, eg, Die kunst Der Fugue, if I recall the title correctly.
  9. This is my favorite period of Byrd's along with the sidemen he chose, namely McLean Adams and Red.
  10. What you willing to pay? I can be convinced if the number is "right". Hmmm. Does tapping one's foot in a bathroom stall count as "flirting?"
  11. Went to a favorite burger house and had burgers and Great Lakes Christmas Ale :rsmile:
  12. i'm not positive about this but i think the beautiful original cover was done by Bennie's then or future sister-in-law, the very famous artist, Betye Saar. The original cover is a beauty. A pity they didn't reissue it.
  13. I think I'd give up all the other senses before hearing.
  14. It's part of the "Crosstown" 2CD package, as are Bert's two other Savoys. Mighty fine stuff! I think the date with Monterose is spread over "Encore" and the third (besides "Musician of the Year") album, so getting that package is good anyway, to have it all in one place. Wow, thanks a lot! I somehow missed this compilation. Yeah, it's from our Andorran friends once again but since Savoy still can't be bothered to release their stuff in complete form (the Montage compilation contained the rest of the Crosstown material and some other tracks from various artists that I've been waiting for them to issue on CD as well). So the sound quality of the Fresh Sound set is good then? Thanks a lot for the offer, I really appreciate it and if it wasn't for ubu's post I would've gladly taken you up on your offer. But that compilation makes more sense for me after all. No problem
  15. Not really - 'less pastoral' would be my description. Side 1 has quite a formal feel to it, with the extra instruments providing something of an orchestral backdrop at times. Side 2 of the LP seems to me quite distinct from side 1 though ('Mtume' etc), with a sound that is sort of reminiscent of the 'Now' session but without the voices. Almost Strata-Eastish. Really though, the LP has a quite distinct - and darker (I think) - sound to any of the other Hutch albums. Not sure if that helps? That does! Thanks!
  16. Thanks for the info-should come in handy for the holidays.
  17. Its going to warm up here too!
  18. I would contend that no flirting is "innocent". Rationalizing it by not acting on it is most likely to be of little comfort to the other's spouse. I don't know if I completely agree-it really boils down to your intentions and if your intentions are just to have a little bit of harmless fun, then I don't see the problem with that. But as Aggie said earlier, and I agree with him, it all depends on the couple and how comfortable they are with it.
  19. Glad to hear that you're getting gigs
  20. Snow's melting and my older daughter is actually pretty bummed out; she was having a huge snowball fight on our street yesterday. Its supposed to warm up to about 60 by Monday.
  21. Thanks, I did, but I guess what I want to really know is if the music itself has the same vibe as the one on Total Eclipse/Patterns/Spiral/ Medina but I guess it doesn't. Do appreciate the Land/Hutch/Chambers collaboration and I'll probably end up picking it up anyway.
  22. Ok, so what's the consensus on 'Head On'? I don't really know Hutch's music beyond 'Total Eclipse'. And I've heard that his BN's from the early to mid seventies are not his best, is this anything like Spiral/Medina/Total Eclipse?
  23. Maybe I'll break out my trumpet too...it was given to me a year ago, and needs some work but I would like to try to learn how to play it.
