  1. It's 5:00 and the poll is closed.
  2. There's only one-and-a-half hours left. Please vote if you haven't yet. :rsmile:
  3. Me too! Jack Webb was so stiff that I thought anything that he was against was something I should be for. I just loved when Webb would say the word Marijuana. It was like he was the biggest expert in the world on the evils of the stuff. Jazzmoose, speaking of Perry Mason. I can't believe I too forgot to mention this show. I LOVE that show. I even read many of the books, because I wanted to fill my Perry Mason fix. I love detective fiction to this day. Have you read the "Nameless Detective" series by Bill Pronzoni? They're set in San Francisco. I've read every volume my local libraries have. :rsmile:
  4. I really like Sun Ra. I've got most of the Evidence reissues, the ESP's, and a few others. The one I come back to the most is Jazz in Silhouette. I really love that album. :rsmile:
  5. Speaking of 90210. I have a confession to make. During the first season of the show my roomate and I watched it a couple times, so we could make fun of it and put it down. Well, we got hooked. During the course of the show, we completely stopped watching tv for about 5 years, except for Wednesday night when we'd pull the tv out of the closet and hook up the rabbit ears and watch 90210. Ooof! As for classic tv. I love the first Bob Newhart show, Get Smart, the old western shows, and any sixties show that would have some groovy fake psychedelic band play in an episode (Bewitched, I Dream of Jeanie), Dragnet's always good for a laugh (especially when Joe Friday talks about the evils of marijuana).
  6. Good idea! We should keep an eye on the new registrations today. We can keep our eyes out for any colleagues of certain Viennese psychiatrists.
  7. It was hard choosing the Ornette Coleman title. I considered doing one of his BN releases, such as the Golden Circle discs. I figured that most of us had the Golden Circle recordings, but I wanted to branch out away from BN and I was hoping that many of us might have the Atlantic box set. I have to admit that I've had this set since it first came out and haven't given it nearly as much attention as I should have. I've listened to New York Is Now and Love Call more than I have his early Atlantic albums which are more well known. I also saw there was a desire for some early Ornette in the thread about possible Album of the Week picks. Right now, the Coltrane has two more votes than Pee Wee, but Ornette or Sonny could make a comeback. 8 hours to go!
  8. Sorry Joe, I didn't think the birthday post would sit up there so long. It's like you had a multi-day birthday. I'll chime in - If you haven't bought the Organissimo cd, you're missing out. It's really enjoyable. I wish we could do it as the album of the week, but I'm not sure how many people have it. :rsmile:
  9. Good to have you back for the Album of the Week, Jazzmoose! I too, haven't been listening to as much jazz lately, except for the albums of the week. Pee Wee is gaining! :rsmile:
  10. I just picked up Mysterious Traveler. I just unwrapped it. I'm excited about hearing it. I wanted to get Tale Spinnin' too, but I didn't have enough. Maybe next time. If you would have told me a couple years ago that I'd be buying Weather Report cds, I would have laughed. I really realize how narrow minded and elitist I have been in my musical tastes in the past. I didn't realize how much I was missing out on. Thanks to all for your input here! :rsmile:
  11. You're welcome! I'm really excited about this as Album of the Week. I love Andrew Hill, but I haven't given this album as much of my listening time as I have to his earlier albums. :rsmile:
  12. In case you don't know, emusic.com has the Contemporary Phineas Newborn albums. :rsmile:
  13. As it stands now, Coltrane has 10 votes and Pee Wee has 8. Who will win? Will Rollins and Coleman make a comeback? If you haven't voted, please do it! Tune in tomorrow (Friday) at 5:00 to see who wins! :rsmile: :rsmile: :rsmile:
  14. In regards to paying for downloadable .mp3 files, what do you guys think of the new service Apple Computers is now offering? I don't mind paying $10/month for unlimited downloads, but $1/song seems insane to me, especially as .mp3s. I know Apple has offerings from the major labels, but I just can't see people paying the money. Though, it could be popular with people who would buy singles, such as teens. Just curious? :rsmile:
  15. I've started the Album of the Week thread for Grass Roots. Album of the Week - Andrew Hill - Grass Roots :rsmile:
  16. The Album of the Week for May 4 - 10 as picked by Rooster Ties is: Andrew Hill - Grass Roots The Album of the Week works this way, the person who picks the cd for this week will nominate the person who will pick the cd for next week. Rooster Ties picked this week's title and nominated me, Africa Brass to pick the album for May 11-17. ___________________________________ Past albums of the week: April 26 - May 3: Weather Report - Black Market April 13 - 26: Lee Morgan - Live at the Lighthouse April 6 - 12: Charles Mingus - Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus March 30 - April 5: Wayne Shorter - The All Seeing Eye March 23 -29: Donald Byrd - Byrd in Hand
  17. I agree with Rooster Ties. I dig Byrd's late sixties output. Rooster Ties, Congratulations! You are now a Supa Groover! :rsmile:
  18. Thanks Jazzbo! I really love listening to Pee Wee. I'll start looking for some of your suggestions. I'll also look for the Bobby Gordon cd. I love hearing Pee Wee on those Condon records. He's always such a highlight for me.
  19. Thanks Noj, I just did it! I like what I've heard so far. :rsmile:
  20. Speaking of Bloomfield. I love his work with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and the Electric Flag. Have any of you heard the Electric Flag's soundtrack to the movie "The Trip" - It has been a favorite of mine for years. If you've seen the movie, you'll know how well the music complements the action. It's an interesting recording by this group. It doesn't sound much like anything else they did. As for the Butterfield band. I've long been a fan of their early albums, such as East/West. I picked up a copy of Butterfield's post-Bloomfield 1969 album, Keep on Moving, which was reissued by a small reissue label called Wounded Bird Records. I'm surprised at how much I enjoy this record. In fact, I was listening to it this morning. I like some of the Butterfield albums when they added the horns. :rsmile:
  21. I got an email from emusic this morning. Here's a quote "we have increased the bit rate of our MP3s from 128 KBPS to a high-quality Variable Bit Rate (VBR). For those of you not familiar with the "ins and outs" of encoding, this means that the sound quality of our tracks has improved dramatically." I don't know much about VBR, but it would be great if they improve the quality of their mp3s. :rsmile:
  22. Thanks everyone for your help! I'm excited to see what album will win. I wish we could do them all. Jazzbo, What Pee Wee Russell cds would you recommend? I would really like to hear more of his music. I've got the Commodore cd and some stuff with Eddie Condon, but I'd like to explore more. Thanks in advance! :rsmile:
  23. I think I'll look for a copy of Mysterious Traveler. :rsmile:
  24. I've been enjoying this album so much that I'm going to pick up some Weather Report too. I truly am surprised how much I like this cd. Joe, now you've turned me on to Metheny and Weather Report. Thanks! I want to get something recorded before this album. What would you guys suggest? :rsmile:
