  1. For me, despite the obviously poor taste Zeppelin had in taking credit for songs they didn't write, they chose amazing material to cover. It made for a very nice primer for exploring early acoustic blues, and a lot of what they covered are some of my favorite blues songs. Naked Eyes "Always Something There To Remind Me," another 80s one hit wonder, was originally by Lou Johnson. Cool thread. I have obviously neglected Otis Redding.
  2. Disturbing.
  3. People didn't realize Led Zeppelin was "covering" other people's music because they stole credit for the compositions. Willie Dixon and others had to sue them to get the recognition and compensation they deserved. While they weren't alone in this practice, such theft and plagiarism shouldn't be confused with those who publicly acknowledge another artist's talent by covering their tunes. So...they aren't covers because...Zeppelin didn't acknowledge them as such?
  4. I love this stuff, it's like music etymology. Shall we list most of the Led Zeppelin discography? A quick google provides this list: * "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" - A folk song by Anne Bredon, this was originally credited as "traditional, arranged by Jimmy Page," then "words and music by Jimmy Page," and then, following legal action, "Bredon/Page/Plant." * "Black Mountain Side" - uncredited version of a traditional folk tune previously recorded by Bert Jansch. * "Bring It On Home" - the first section is an uncredited cover of the Willie Dixon tune (as performed by Sonny Boy Williamson). * "Communication Breakdown" - apparently derived from Eddie Cochran's "Nervous Breakdown." * "Custard Pie" - uncredited cover of Bukka White's "Shake 'Em On Down," with lyrics from Sleepy John Estes's "Drop Down Daddy." * "Dazed And Confused" - uncredited cover of the Jake Holmes song (see The Above Ground Sound Of Jake Holmes). * "Hats Off To (Roy) Harper" - uncredited version of Bukka White's "Shake 'Em On Down." * "How Many More Times" - Part one is an uncredited cover of the Howlin' Wolf song (available on numerous compilations). Part two is an uncredited cover of Albert King's "The Hunter." * "In My Time Of Dying" - uncredited cover of the traditional song (as heard on Bob Dylan's debut). * "The Lemon Song" - uncredited cover of Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor" - Wolf's publisher sued Zeppelin in the early 70s and settled out of court. * "Moby Dick" - written and first recorded by Sleepy John Estes under the title "The Girl I Love," and later covered by Bobby Parker. * "Nobody's Fault But Mine" - uncredited cover of the Blind Willie Johnson blues. * "Since I've Been Lovin' You" - lyrics are the same as Moby Grape's "Never," though the music isn't similar. * "Stairway To Heaven" - the main guitar line is apparently from "Taurus" by Spirit. * "White Summer" - uncredited cover of Davey Graham's "She Moved Through The Fair." * "Whole Lotta Love" - lyrics are from the Willie Dixon blues "You Need Love." The Animals - House Of The Rising Sun is a traditional blues song Ram Jam - Black Betty is a Leadbelly song Nirvana - Where Did You Sleep Last Night is a Leadbelly song The Doors - Back Door Man is a Willie Dixon song I wish there was an existing recording of the Anne Bredon original "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You."
  5. Agreed on Campbell, and my first comment after Lynch's run was "nice tackling, Saints." They were all going for strips instead of wrapping him up.
  6. When I first heard that song, I said to myself: "Why's this guy ripping off Steely Dan?" Oh youth! Ha! I didn't get into Steely Dan until after hearing "Song For My Father." The borrowed notes never bothered me, but something about Steely Dan made their sound take a while to grow on me. Now I like them quite a bit.
  7. Is 5 more cheating? 1. Horace Silver - Song For My Father I heard the title track randomly, and didn't know its name. I didn't even know where to start looking for it. For a while it was the "holy crap I need that song with the horns and the piano" song. 2. V/A - The Best Of Blue Note In my search for "Song For My Father," I bought this compilation. Its track list is as follows: 1. John Coltrane "Blue Train" 2. Herbie Hancock "Maiden Voyage" 3. Donald Byrd "Cristo Redentor" 4. Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers "Moanin'" 5. Lou Donaldson "Blues Walk" 6. Horace Silver "Song For My Father" (an elated Noj did rejoice!!!) 7. Jimmy Smith "Back At The Chicken Shack" 8. Kenny Burrell "Chitlins Con Carne" 9. Lee Morgan "The Sidewinder" I began to suspect there's a lot more to jazz than I had ever considered. At first I kept playing Horace over and over, then I started listening to the whole comp. Every song is incredible. I know some have reservations about "Cristo Redentor," but to my ears this was the perfect primer for what I enjoy most in jazz. It was based on this and consequent Blue Note purchases that I ventured onto the Blue Note Bulletin Board in a greedy search for more. 3. Herbie Hancock - Head Hunters & Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage My first two of Herbie's albums, bought in rapid succession. I'd known him as the guy who had the "Rockit" video on MTV, then from the title track of "Maiden Voyage," then I heard some crazy funk jazz track at a friend's and how 'bout that it's Herbie Hancock "Watermelon Man." Came to learn about his amazing career in a very odd order. What range. 4. Roy Ayers - Evolution & Flashback 2CD Anthology Got here from Digable Planets. It's jazzy, it's funky, it's disco...it's cool. Everybody loves the sunshine. Yes they do. 5. V/A - Bossa Nova Brasil - Verve Amazing compilation. Listened to a boatload of downloads from the Loronix blog and this still has many of my favorite Brazilian tunes.
  8. Wouldn't catch me spelunking around in something like that! Beautiful images, thanks for the link.
  9. LOL, for sure Agg had his new wifey do his picks this season. Oddly enough I had the best four-week run of anyone in the poll, getting 12 correct four weeks in a row, yet I didn't win the week any of those weeks.
  10. I'm pretty sure that every time I picked Houston to win, they lost, and vice/versa. Killed me all year.
  11. Yeah, I should have taken more risks. That was dumb.
  12. About 2000 CDs and 100 LPs. If I did count my mp3s I have around 4500 albums total.
  13. Cool old thread! I'm surprised it didn't get more replies. Ditto. Hendrix changed everything for me. I heard Africa/Brass at my friend's house. It was some of the first jazz I ever enjoyed. Went to the local music shop to buy it, but they didn't have it so I bought Giant Steps instead. All the songs profoundly advanced what my ears could understand. "Naima" remains one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Still my favorite rap group. Listening to an album like this branched my listening into many genres, because I ended up finding all the samples. Produced by George Clinton. Made me know I like funky music. Cemented jazz as my favorite genre, in knowing that jazz could be as deep and spiritual as Coltrane and as funky and groovy as this.
  14. vajerzy and SS1, get your picks in!
  15. This week should be brutal. Teams which have already clinched their playoff spot will be resting starters. Flip a coin.
  16. As with Led Zeppelin, I like their covers, and I like the original blues and folks songs even better, viewed through the filter of an entirely different genre. I dig some of Elvis' covers for the recorded sounds they are, historical context and personality issues be damned.
  17. Hehehe, if you click on the image of Chuck at his computer, you can zoom in and almost read the titles in his cd library. Cool interview Chuck!
  18. Remarkable people, I can't imagine having such a detailed and chronological memory. For me the days all blend together and I can't recall dates at all.
  19. Nice win this week, Nurse Conn!
  20. My Oakland Raiders are so vastly improved from what I've gotten used to, even the blown lead to Jacksonville doesn't sting all that bad. Plus I'm a big fan of former UCLA Bruin Maurice Jones-Drew, so I'm happy to see him playing so well for the Jags.
  21. This forum needs this one... ...and this one...
  22. It's a fun listen! Just revisited recently to put it on my new iPod. Get it!
  23. LOL, sorry Dangerous Dan. Thanks for the correction. Didn't mean to touch a nerve.
  24. As I understand it the Yanks are paying A-Rod less than Jeter already, since Texas is still paying a bunch of A-Rod's salary. The deal on the table for Jeter would already make him the highest paid infielder in MLB, and he won't get more from another team. His numbers are declining, he shouldn't expect superstar money.
