FWIW, when they bought the Sanctuary Music Group, the jazz reissues of the ASV label completely disappeared. F So these might depend on previous reissues by labels such as ASV? But those were never complete, to my understanding... I only have a single disc and not a very convincing one. Guess we just need to wait for the boxes to appear! My point was that a major wouldn't use the 50-year EU rule to reissue material owned by other labels. I don't know, we'll have to wait and see. F

If I'm not mistaken, even closer inspection will reveal that "Smoke Signal" (3:28) and "Nica's Tempo" (5:27), both recorded February 4th, 1957, are missing from Jazz Lab (CD 2, #1-6). F

Nat Hentoff writes about Iranian jazz blogger Ehsan Koshbakht, here. Ehsan is a good friend, passionate and straight-talking. His is quite an amazing story of jazz as the way to keep someone sane under hardship and duress. F

How relevant this is, I don't know, but Basie recorded "Cherokee" a few months earlier than Barnet. It's faster than Barnet's but the theme is too sirupy despite Jo Jones' efforts. Also, it spreads over two sides of 78-RPM record, with Lester Young's solo caught in the middle. F

IIRC, the other person was RCA and later Colpix producer Jack Lewis. The story is on Bill Crow's book and elsewhere. F

The Woody Shaw set seems to be available from Pop Market. Any feedback yet? F

Excellent story Marcello. Funny, his "After the Dead" (on Reel Time) has always sounded to me like a blues built on Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man". F

Not the first time they overlap, but never in such a prominent way. Anyhow, I did a quick check and the only difference seems to be that the FS has an alternate mono version of "Foggy Nights" (Budd Johnson album) that seems to be different (longer) from the stereo one. That and the slightly thicker booklet on the FS. Ah, and the FS has a tune called "Trade Winds" that is replaced by "Danzon D'Amor" on the 5-CD set (both by Rex Stewart album). I presume it's the same tune(?) F

FWIW, the first time I heard the YouTube video posted by Larry Kart it instantly reminded me of Ben Webster with Bennie Moten (1932). I compared them and it's not the same thing, but I'd go with the idea of a regional trait more than a personal one of Mr. Whitby. F
