F/S Frank Zappa and Mothers ‘71 Box Set

Well, Flo & Eddy could definitely sing, and Aynsley Dunbar was the swingiest drummer Zappa ever had, IMHO. -
Solid Records of Japan issued two CDs (with strikingly creative artwork) of never-before-released Mitchell studio sessions recorded in the Netherlands for Timeless in 1989. With Dado Moroni, Sweets Edison, Ben Riley and Adrienne West on a couple of tracks: https://www.discogs.com/release/25374409-Red-Mitchell-And-Friends-feat-Harry-Sweets-Edison-Days-Of-Wine-And-ROses https://www.discogs.com/release/24697517-Red-Mitchell-And-Friends-Teach-Me-Tonight Nice stuff, Mitchell's heavy pick-uped bass and wrooom-wrooom style notwithstanding.

Well, having a distributor for CDs does not make sense economically for anybody involved. Bandcamp probably does, I hope Mr Davidson finds strength, enthusiasm and resources to set it up (and I am sure he's sitting on potentially releasable treasure trove of stuff that never saw the light of the day).

Just noticed a note on the EMANEM website (my emphasis): This web site is closed for sales during the winter. Unfortunately, the local post office (really a sorting office) closes at 10 AM. This means that, in order to post something, I have to get up and go out early before the day has warmed up. I am feeling too old for such a routine, so I am hibernating until the spring and then will see how I feel. (I always wanted a long life, but did not want the limitations and frustrations of old age!) During my hibernation, I hope to be able to investigate that possibilities of putting downloads on Bandcamp, and also reduce the prices of much of the existing stock for sale after the winter. I am not expecting to issue any new CDs, nor to reissue or repress any CDs. M.D. Not surprising, Mr. Davidson (one-man-Emanem) turned 80 this year.

My mailbox is begging for mercy on this bandcamp Friday... Meanwhile, a November best-of-jazz bandcamp write-up. Except for a few well familiar operators, I barely know anybody from the list - which is good. Plan to skim through these tonight. Had a cursory listen to some of the CDs from the Barry Guy Not Two boxes. This Percy Pursglove guy is something else. Curious about the Barry Guy / Vandermark combination - avoided Vandermark for decades (I guess the last thing of his I enjoyed were AALY Trio discs - and these are 20-25 (!) years old now). Yes, streamed it a couple of times, great stuff.

Lady Bug Dance just reissued on CD (for the first time).

Thanks, Gheorghe.

Not too much "50's Miles" - like?

What are you referring to?
-
Yeah sure, him too.

Trumpeters who would have worked better on Ascension could be Manfred Schoof and maybe Jacques Coursil - but probably a couple of years later than 1965.

Revisiting J.J. Johnson's The Brass Orchestra (Verve)
Д.Д. replied to Larry Kart's topic in Recommendations
Listening to it on Spotify, great stuff. Thanks for the recommendation. Some voicings are reminiscent of Hindemith. -
Cheapskate that I am, I ordered my Barry Guy sets through serpent.pl . Not that I listened to all of the previous Barry Guy sets I have for years already (Loose Tensegrity Dogs whatever).

I just played track 1 so far. It is from this CD: https://www.discogs.com/release/14121684-Kahil-ElZabars-Ritual-Trio-Featuring-Pharoah-Sanders-Africa-Nda-Blues I don't really care for this track. First of all, the tune itself is primitive (yeah, I know it's Coltrane). Then, the main thing, I hate El'Zabar's drumming - extremely monotonous and clumsy with overuse of cymbals. One of the most non-swinging drummers out there, IMHO. Favors is not playing well either and his solo is just boring, at a loss of ideas (with totally unnecessary El'Zabar at background "support"). Both drums and bass are not recorded well, giving them shallow flat sound. Both saxophonists play well (and are easily identifiable), but not spectacular - quite predictable.

Sorry to hear this, love his playing. I highly recommend his first "proper" solo album "'smatter", which motivated Evan Parker to start his label psi (Parker was excited about Dudek's date and nobody wanted to release it): https://www.discogs.com/release/2333504-Gerd-Dudek-Smatter . Evan Parker refers to Dudek is "the holy one" in the liner notes, no less.

Black Sabbath's "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" is a great 1973 album (and Bill Ward is quite a swinging drummer). Billy Cobham's "Spectrum" was solid, better than contemporary Mahavishnu stuff, IMHO. Gentle Giant's "In a Glass House" was an interesting album too. And not to forget Henry Cow's debut, "Legend"! I can well imagine Zappa's "Over-Nite Sensation" being a disappointment for those (few) who enjoyed "Waka/Jawaka" and "Grand Wazoo" a year before. From what I understand, it was not selling that great either - that is, until a well-selling Apostrophe (') was released in 1974, pulling "Over-Nite Sensation's" sales with it. I like the album still. Very tight playing, good tunes ("Montana", "Zomby Woof"), really well recorded. Good singing too - you don't hear Ricky Lancelotti elsewhere, do you?

Zappa discussing McLaughlin a bit in '73: I very much doubt that Zappa liked McLaughlin's playing or writing. There are a couple of studio solos he plays where he does sound McLaughlinish, and these are boring solos (by FZ standards - I'd still prefer those to Mahavishnu-era McLaughlin). Here is one: Well, Zappa himself said that he rarely managed a good guitar solo in studio. He admired Allan Holdsworth, though (and plugged him on every occasion in the '80s) .

Ruth Underwood (Zappa's percussionist in the '70s) mentioned that Zappa's decision to add a second drummer (Chester Thompson) in '73 was probably influenced by him seeing Billy Cobham live.
