I own this one, has a wonderful version of "Bernie's Tune":

Recently picked up a CD by the best jazz accordionist on the planet, Richard Galliano, that consists of a quartet collaboration featuring Burton. As GB has worked with and played the music of Piazzolla, the CD features 5 compositions by the Argentine master. Worth checking out:

Instrumentally, nobody can touch Rollins' version in the ON IMPULSE (Impulse) session. What a sound he gets on his horn - a total masterpiece! -
Thelonious Monk: Live at Newport 1958-59.
MartyJazz replied to Cliff Englewood's topic in New Releases
Nice one, I think I was most interested in the tracks with Ellington, but I just might have to check it out. I've owned a bootleg of the tracks with Duke for some time. Of great interest of course is the fact that Monk did appear with Duke's band, although I find the arrangement (by Strayhorn, I believe) of "Monk's Dream" rather trite. What's somewhat funny however, and I don't know if this CD retains it, is Duke's obvious ire that surfaces when the audience claps wildly for Monk at the end of Monk's sit-in with the band. Duke says repeatedly, "He'll be back, he'll be back" and when the audience clapping doesn't abate enough (it seems), Duke repeats the phrase for the last time in a somewhat, threatening manner. I don't think Duke appreciated excessive enthusiasm for a guest artist on his (Duke's) time. -
I caught the Joe Locke-Geoff Keezer Quartet in concert at Nova Univ in Davie, Florida back in May '07. Just great! Gary Burton, now a Ft. Lauderdale resident, was in the audience. Locke is well worth seeing - a fabulous vibrophonist.

Sad news indeed. Just this past Saturday eve, we had dinner for my mother (visiting from NYC) at my home, while listening to Blossom tracks from a number of her early Verve recordings. Great fun, my mother of course asking me to make her a "tape". RIP indeed.

One of my very favorite vocal recordings: Jo Stafford - JO + JAZZ (Corinthian). Wonderful arrangements, singing plus Ben Webster!

Agreed, but why did she wait til she hit 40 to start taking off her clothes in every movie? Yeah, and didn't she look great in "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead"?!!!

"Without music, life is worth diddley", I'm OK with that! Wonderful clip.

Tsk tsk! Michael's innate modesty probably precluded him from mentioning his excellent trio version on the Steeplechase release MILESTONES:

Many thanks to one and all for the wonderful greetings and wishes. Much appreciated. And for those of you who know how to reach me personally, many thanks for not singing the following: When I get older losing my hair, Many years from now, Will you still be sending me a valentine Birthday greetings bottle of wine? If I'd been out till quarter to three Would you lock the door, Will you still need me, will you still feed me, When I'm.............. :excited:

Two LPs that I've enjoyed over the years are WELCOME BACK, J.R., a 1979 quartet date with Hod O'Brien. and an '81 collaboration with Hugh Brodie titled BEBOP LOOSE & LIVE -
Three somewhat rare LPs (I would guess) that I have were released on the Birdseye label and are titled "Prince Lawsha (note the spelling): FIREBIRDS - LIVE AT BERKELEY JAZZ FESTIVAL", Vols. 1, 2, & 3. Vol. 1's personnel includes Hadley Caliman, Bobby Hutcherson, Buster Williams and Charles Moffett. Vol. 2 has Hubert Eaves, Ron Carter, Roy McCurdy and Kenneth Nash, recorded May '74. Vol. 3 includes Sonny Simmons, Hutcherson, Buster Williams & Moffett. Dates for Vol. 1 & 3 are not stated, but probaly also occurred in the early '70s. Some really great moments on a number of extended tracks. Have any of these been released on CD?

After having seen this group at a recent concert, I was extremely impressed and convinced that performing jazz material is not just a gimmick as each classically trained member is not only technically accomplished but a legitimate jazz improviser. I'm referring to the Turtle Island String Quartet, otherwise now known as the Turtle Island Quartet ("String" description for some reason has been dropped). Anyway, I highly recommend DANZON (Koch International) wherein Paquito D'Rivera appears on three tracks playing marvelously on clarinet, and A LOVE SUPREME: THE LEGACY OF JOHN COLTRANE (Telarc) which naturally features quite a few Trane compositions as well as pieces he was associated with.

Isn't that just a copy, i.e., an illegal violation of copyright?

Thank you very much MartyJazz for that explanation, now I can update my database with confidence. An odd practice, in my opinion, but, as you say, you can't please everyone. Anyway, if the series continues at the same high standard as volume one, I'll be on tenterhooks waiting for subsequent volumes. Thanks for the thanks but Carl Smith himself was gracious enough to promptly clarify the misconceptions you or others may have had about the material on Sonny's latest CD. I simply relayed CS's response that included his "Can't please everybody" remark.

As I have personally given Carl Smith some private Sonny material (none included on this "Road Shows" release), I forwarded this thread to him and here is his response: "Tracks 1,3 and 4 of the Road Shows CD (more than 30 minutes) are from my collection and the rest from Sonny's soundboard tapes. The notes in the CD are all correct as to date, venue and personnel. The applause has been edited to give the impression and feel of one concert and the tracks were mastered so as to reduce the differences in sound character from one track to another. It's funny that one fellow on the forum feels they all sound the same. A reviewer complained that he is bothered by the great differences in sound between the ones from my collection (which were taped from radio and TV broadcasts by fans) and the soundboard tapes. Can't please everybody. In any event, I'm deeply gratified to get more than 30 minutes of what I consider Sonny's best work before the jazz public. That's as much as an LP! And there will be more of my stuff on future Road Shows CDs. "

I absolutely hate the Obama coins exploitation ads

My wife and I laughed when we saw the TV ad. But the gullibility of the American consumer can never be underestimated even in these more cost-conscious times. -
