Well my take on the impending sale was, hold off on buying any OJCs. My reasoning was: Fantasy never did much to improve their OJC reissues. Sometimes alternate takes true, but almost nothing in terms of remastering (until the recent, limited, K2 reissues), new liner notes, photos, etc. So I figured that a new purchaser, wanting to maximize return on its new investment, might start a bluenote-like reissue program with additional photos, tracks, new linernotes, etc. to boost sales. I think all would agree that the bluenote approach, while not perfect, puts Fantasy to shame. Of course, after reading Chuck's postings on the subject, I could see it going that way too. Perhaps Chuck's view is the more likely . . .

Single CD category: Winter & Winter is a run-away winner, with an honorable mention to Hatology. Box Set: Many strong contenders here, but my vote goes to Charlie Christian - Genius of the Electric Guitar Box. Of course Verve has a great many strong contenders.

I recently purchased a sealed set for $74.11 om half.com. Have really enjoyed the Albert Ammons, Jay McShann & Eddie Vinson. That's all I've listened to so far.

Well you got me fired-up over that Live at the Jazz Showcase recording, but when I when to www.daniloperez.com, the site seems a bit out of date. Just says available on-line 2nd week of November. Am I missing something or is Mr. Perez just behind schedule? Thanks.

The music is great. The mastering is great. That metal box with no back makes no sense what-so-ever.

I'm looking for "Blues, Boogie, & Bop: The 1940's Mercury Sessions." I can be reached at petezwief@gdinet.com. Thanks.

Is it possible to connect my stereo speakers & amp to my computer? There's no stereo type jack in the back of my computer. It does have tree smaller headphone type jacks, colored pink, blue and green. The green is for my computer speakers. Pink looks like its for a mic. Not sure what the blue is for. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

The Peter Brotzmann Chicago Tentet played at Milwaukee School of Engineering Monday 11/08/04. An enjoyable show and a pretty good turnout. Fred Lomberg-Holm conducted the 1st number using cue cards that said things like "softer" "frenzied", etc. I'm not sure if Brotzmann was into this approach as he wasn't playing much and Fred made some shrugging, questionning gestures to which Brotzmann responded by starting to play. Fred also had some sort of box with tggle switches that he operated. On the next number directions were given by christmas tree-like light bulbs. Perhaps something was wrong because at one point Brotzman flicked a bulb and it then turned on. I'm not sure if this is a new approach as this was the first time I've seen this band since an Empty Bottle show 4-5 years ago. To me Jeb Bishop was the stand-out. His playing added a bit of welcome structure that works well with the wild energy blowing of Mats Gustofson, Ken Vandermark and Brotzman. I also really enjoyed Bishop when Atomic & Vandermark 5 played Onopa Brewery in Milwaukee this past summer.

Revenant is planning big Albert Ayler box
Peter replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Mine was supposed to ship today. However, when I checked the order status at cduniverse it said back-ordered. Bummer. -
How many of the track has vocals? Thanks.
-
I agree that none of the Selects are a priority. All the one's I've heard are a definate step down from a typical Mosaic. That said, the last disc in the Curtis Amy set is great!

Complete Argo/Mercury Art Farmer/Benny Golson/
Peter replied to Out2Lunch's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I got the new disc 7 today AND new front tray liner for discs 3 & 4 that includes discography info for session F. -
Gotta put my plug in for Zombie Heaven as well. And of course both nuggets sets (though I prefer the first). And for your consideration, Captain Beefheart "Grow Fins", Galixie 500, and Bob Marley "Freedom Song."

Faces: "Five Guys Walk Into a Bar . . . ." Because they had such a unique attitude, they put their own stamp on basic rock 'n roll and finally because so much of the material in the box was not previously available.

please enlighten me. What does "OBI" mean? Thanks.

Well I hate to complain but here goes: The jewelcase booklet for discs 3/4 is missing the discography info for session F. I'm shocked that nobody noticed it before me! -
Just pre-ordered my copy of Farmer-Golson.

Back in high school I loved Rod Stewart's Mercury recordings (rain coat, gasoline, alley, every picture, never a dull moment and yes even smiler). Of course he was GREAT with Jeff Beck. Completely wore-out A Nod is as Good as a wink. Five Guys . . . is about 30 years late but still (of course) very WELCOME. A critic (don't remember who) said sonething to the effect that never has such a talent been so completed wasted (do you think i'm sexy). So after decades of crap from one of the best voices ever its GREAT to hear some top notch stuff again. And what's the story on Rod's voice?? Was he born that way?? Of course Ron Wood is also great. A unique coarse raw slide player. Makes 3-cord rock 'n roll sound soooo good. And the occassional Ronnie Lane tune makes for the perfect change of pace. Now lets hope they release MORE!!!

What non-mosaic box set is tops on your list.

faces, Faces, FACES . . . FIVE GUYS WALKED INTO A BAR . . . Where was this stuff 30 years ago when I wore-out "A Nod is as Good as a wink . . . to a Blind Horse"? These guys should have been HUGE HUGE HUGE!!! Well at least we've got these 5 hours. Would like to see some more live stuff release though! -
I've always wondered: I know that the label fronts the $$$ to make the recording, and then the cost is recovered from CD sales. So in effect, the artist is paying for the recording, the label just fronts the artist the $$$. So why then, does the label own the recording, if the artist paid for it?
