  1. No, of course. You need the "S" to go with "Richards". I was confused yesterday (and not a drop to drink).
  2. Oh, yes - Nix / Nick Stabulas is good too.
  3. Jim - incredible! Far more than I have ever managed even though I've been practicing here. "Ra/Robert" wouldn't do in England but as you're there it gets the white flag for sure. And I 've got to allow the "Stabulas/Les" because of your patience. But had you just had enough at nineteen - Richard Sutton? I can think of plenty of other Richards who would offer the chance to continue. Style - I like your Joe Cinderella/Ella Fitzgerald/Gerald... best. Will the thread revive? Please post any length, anybody else, even if you can't match Jim's.
  4. I was told that the politics forum is where all the nutters hang out. I've never even looked there. Maybe other nutters also hang out on the discography forum but a different kind of nutter entirely. (I include myself ) Nothing wrong with being a nutter anyway. Could the phantom members who never, or rarely, post be alter egos of other, more active, members? How many members have more than one identity here? Not me!
  5. In the UK, the premier jazz programme for me is "Jazz Record Requests", for many years presented by the marvellous Peter Clayton but taken over after his very sad death by Geoffrey Smith who is from Michigan I believe but lives in this country now. By sending in to the prgramme, you can get to hear things you normally couldn't ever hear and playlists are published on the BBC website. No commercials of course, it's the BBC! There is lots and lots of interesting stuff in the BBC archives if you can find out about it. There is a two hour show today (Christmas Day) from 1600 hrs GMT and the playlist is:- Love for Sale (Porter) Performed by Stan Kenton and his Orchestra: Stan Kenton (pno), Bud Brisbois (tpt), Rolf Ericson (tpt), Bill Mathieu (tpt), Roger Middleton (tpt), Kent Larsen (tbn), Archie Le Coque (tbn), Don Sebesky (tbn), Jim Amlotte (b/tbn), Bob Knight (b/sx), Charlie Mariano (a/sx), Ronnie Rubin (t/sx), Bill Trujillo (t/sx), Marvin Holladay (b/sx), Jack Nimitz (b/sx), Jimmy Campbell (dms), Mike Pacheco (Cuban dms), Pete Chivily (bs) Recorded 10 October 1959, Lafayette Taken from the album Road Show CD (Capitol CDP 7 96328 2) Take the A Train (Strayhorn) Performed by Dave Brubeck (pno), Paul Desmond (a/sx), Bob Bates (bs), Joe Dodge (dms) Recorded 26 March 1954 Taken from the album The Essential Dave Brubeck 2003 CD (Columbia/Legacy 510594 2) Originally released on the album Jazz Goes to College The Christmas Song (Tormé, Wells) Performed by Stacey Kent (voc), Jim Tomlinson (a/sx), David Newton (pno), Dave Chamberlain (bs), Matt Home (dms) Recorded 2002 Taken from the single The Christmas Song 2003 CD (Candid 45002) Christmastime is Coming (Hopkins) Performed by Lightnin' Hopkins (voc, gtr) Recorded 1950s Taken from the album The King of the Blues LP (Pickwick PC-3013) Struttin' with Some Barbecue (Armstrong) Performed by Humphrey Lyttelton (tpt), John Picard (tbn), Jimmy Skidmore (t/sx), Tony Coe (a/sx, clt), Joe Temperley (b/sx), Ian Armitt (pno), Brian Brocklehurst (bs), Eddie Taylor (dms) Recorded May 1958, London Taken from the album Humph in Perspective 1958 LP (Parlophone PMC 1070) Swingin' the Berry's* (Trad.) 6. A certain latitude is allowed, especially when style is good, you see. But Stan Roderick can be pronounced "Rod - er - rick" so "er- rick" is near enough to "Eric". Don't get stuck on one possibility though, there are plenty more. Not much of a party yet!
  7. But the whole name was "Eric" and matches with "erick" of "Roderick" so is complete on one side, the right, in my example. Now if you could think of someone whose whole first name... Hint! hint! And that leads on to... But maybe you need to be quick or someone could steal a march. Hint again! Makes it too easy if you can have partial names on both sides, you see? Here it is again for reference then - Stan Roderick/Eric Peter/Peter King/King Oliver/Oliver Nelson/Nelson Boyd/Boyd Raeburn. I must try to find something by Honor then. If she consorts with Louis Stewart she must be good.
  8. Joe Cinderella / Ella Fitzgerald / Gerald Wilson / Sonny Clark / Clark Terry / Terry Smith / Smith Dobson / Sonny Criss / Chris Connor / Honor Heffernan Would be an incredible ten but is only four (from Sonny Clark to Smith Dobson) because neither Wilson nor Sonny is complete on one side - same for Dobson and Sonny. Know what I mean? But well done indeed. Thanks for starting, Jim. Can anyone folllow that? Same length or more? BTW, Connor/Honor is near enough. But who is Honor Heffernan? I can't find her at AMG.
  9. Definitely not! How dare you ask???? Not complete on either side. I knew I would have to watch you!
  10. Current leader - Jim R Sonny Clark / Clark Terry / Terry Smith / Smith Dobson / Sun Ra / Robert Conti / Conte Candoli / Lee Wiley / Lee Morgan / Morgana King / King Oliver / Oliver Nelson / Nelson Boyd / Boyd Raeburn / Bern Nix / Nick Stabulas / Les McCann / Ann Richards / Richard Sutton (19) Mentioned in Dispatches - Couw ... Joe Benjamin / Benjamin Wolf / Wolf Hudalla / Dollar Brand / Brandon Ross / Roscoe Mitchell / Hal Russell / Russell George / George Handy / Andy Bey / Baby Face Willette / Ed Lewis / Lewis Nash / Nasheet Waits ... 11. So, silly games are in order for Christmas. If Cannonball-addict can do it… My game is called “Jazz Star Chains” and involves stringing together the names of jazz stars in the way given below, which is my best effort so far. Here are the rules:- 1. It is the way the name sounds that is the criterion – for instance, John Lewis/Louis Armstrong is acceptable, whereas Herbie Lewis/Louis Stewart is not as it is pronounced “Louie” Stewart. 2. The name must be that by which the star is usually known – i.e. Count Basie, not William or Bill. 3. The stars must be jazz players or singers and fairly well known. The decision of the judge (that’s me) is final on this question as on any other. 4. Any one name must be complete on one side at least. That is, Buster Williams/William Schiopffe gets by (because the “S” at the beginning of the latter’s surname makes “Williams” complete) whereas J J Johnson/Sonny Berman does not. 5. A star name can only be used once in a chain, or we could have Terry Clarke/Clark Terry ad infinitum. 6. The judge (that’s me) can make up more rules as he thinks of them (this is to prevent any Smart Alec dodges as we go – Couw, please note!) 7. Extra marks will be given for style but they won’t count – it’s the greatest distance traveled that wins the day. There is no rule against anyone using parts of or the whole of other attempts provided they make a total string which has not been posted before. No prizes, just the acclamation of being the winner and any resulting adulation. I will post the highest scorer just below here as we go, if anyone can beat my effort that is!
  12. With that line-up, 5 has to be Shearing I should think. I remember hearing him on the radio - he said that the big secret of the Shearing sound was that the vibrato of the vibes had to be turned off and that none of his immitators at the time realised this. Sounds as though it's off on that one. And is 12 Shearing too? If so, difficlut to hear the guitar in the ensemble I thought. Again, I hope to try for more later. I'm getting into the Christmas spirit now and this disc is the main reason, but some of the tunes have me puzzled still. Oh, yes! 4 sounds like Joe Pass.
  13. I will try for more later. For now I will just say that 17 is "Frank's Tune" but it is not the version I know on "Big George" by George Coleman. Is it the composer leading then? Frank Strozier. 16 sounds like Grant Green and Stanley Turrentine to me. 10 trumpet - Kenny Dorham? Nice one, Al! Really enjoyable - good fun.
  14. Thanks a lot for the advice, Dmitry. I am in touch with a dealer but am sure you are right about the pittance. I don't have to accept any offer of course but one I am for for taking the easy way out usually. Your suggestion about a university is interesting though - I will give it some thought.
  15. I was even more erratic than I thought - not only did I put "Nite" for "Lite", but also "Flight" for "Flite". Got it right at last, I think, but not certain.
  16. Thanks to you too, Dmitry. Plenty of helpful advice as usual.
  17. Thanks, Brownie - you posted as I was messing about here. I'm considering getting rid of my entire vinyl collection in one go, mainly due to pressure from a certain direction. Not that it's all that big or worth all that much, as I keep saying.
  18. Still nothing on the LP, although it has been issued on CD. Quite a nice album, though.
  19. Sorry - I've just, after all this time, noticed that the cover says "Lite Flight", not "Nite Flight". Back to the drawing board!
  20. Trying to do some research on my modest LP collection and looking up offer prices Gemm, Music Stack, etc I ran into a complete blank in respect of the album "Nite Flight" by Kenny Drew, with Thad Jones, Bob Berg, George Mraz and Jimmy Cobb. I tried "Night" but still no result - nothing using Google either. I tried AMG but nothing there that I could find. Could anyone tell me if it is rare and how much it might be worth? Steeplechase - 1977.
  21. We've got a number of impressive experts here already but the more the merrier. Welcome indeed!!
  22. So many to choose from - this guy gets around! But I've always liked the album "Alter Ego" by James Williams with Billy Pierce, Bill Easley, Ray Drummond and Tony Reedus. Also some Brecon Jazz Festival 1995 material with Kenny Barron and Ben Riley.
  23. Happy Birthday, John.
  24. Listening to a version of the tune "Down" by Miles Davis on a Sal Nistico album, I am sure I have it somewhere under a different name but can't find out where. Does anyone know if it has an alternative title? Or perhaps more than one?
  25. Fearless Frank Foster - Raunchy Rita - December 1965 is the nearest I can get and the only one I can help with. No, it isn't! Art Blakey - No Problem - July 28/29 1959 and November 15 1959. Nothing on the others. Editing – The information above seems quite certain of itself but I have no idea where it came from now, although some was I think from m2n of yesteryear. I don’t have the albums. So if anyone has more accurate sources, I stand to be corrected.
