Masao Yagi -- Modern Jazz Blue Mood -- (Columbia, JP)
beautifully arranged set of standards for quartet and sextet feat. Yagi (pno, arr), George Otsuka, Akira Miyazawa a.o.
Ah wow, glad I got to see them a number of times over the years. I can't be in the city this weekend but I'm sure it will be a great send off.
I guess at least there's the webcast (a la Phish).
I've never had the Golden Circle on CD so the extra music would certainly be worthwhile for me... probably can download it somewhere, though.
As for Andrew Hill, the alternate band performing Grass Roots would make a nice LP though Tone Poet pricing I'm not so enthusiastic about.
yep, I agree with this assessment.
the same volume of Conversations also has a fascinating interview with Bill Lowe, who I didn't realize lived in London and played with the South African contingent at the end of the '60s.
the only one of those I have is the Strata-East though I have seen the other two online (not in person). The Strata-East is great.
There's an incredible oral history of Mr. Griffin in the third volume of William Parker's Conversations book on RogueArt. I transcribed the interviews and it was quite an intense process! He has led a fascinating life.
Excellent album. I wonder if the liner notes say much more about Callins -- Jeff Crompton did some research on him (Can't recall if they knew one another or not) and it seems like several people here also encountered him in life. It always irks me when reissues talk about how "unknown" or "mysterious" someone is, and the reality is that the label or whoever just didn't go around asking people to tell the story.
