  1. yeah, I have stuff on either side of this that I like much better too.
  2. you're right about that. It's a good record and I actually don't mind the cover, but yes, sloppy assemblage there.
  3. ha, no disapproval of the "certain set," just never was my cuppa.
  4. I used to have a Prestige blue label of this album, many years ago. I wasn't that into it and purged it without a second thought. Now, Eastern Sounds is one of the most desirable jazz albums among a certain set of collectors. I haven't listened to it in decades but part of me would not mind having that old copy just to cash in!
  5. Awesome Elvin album. Haven't dug the Hutch out in many years but it is a fine one. Glad not to smoke anymore. Perhaps my favorite jazz smoking pic that isn't Joe Henderson:
  6. If it's done well or interestingly I don't mind if it's a common tune.
  7. I've had it a few times over the years but could never connect with it. Oddly all the copies I had were mono and I don't think I've ever seen a stereo pressing though it probably exists.
  8. I'd like to hear some of this unissued stuff if it survives... really have grown to appreciate Jack Wilson in recent years. He's a beautiful player.
  9. Vangelis made some good records though, including one with Brian Odgers and Tony Oxley. Aphrodite's Child is pretty sweet as well. New Age is a pretty wide range, much of it pretty interesting, and I would hardly put Laraaji or Schawkie Roth in the same category as the G. Yanni and John Tesh are commercial lite music and that's another thing entirely. G is sorta in there and sorta not.
  10. Cool.
  11. Bird Show Band -- s/t -- Amish good little record with Jim Baker, Josh Abrams, Dan Bitney, John Herndon, and Ben Vida.
  12. Damn. RIP.
  13. Anybody else have problems with the vinyl set? My LP 1 is unplayably warped and has a gouge at the end of one side. I wonder how easy it is to get a replacement disc from Verve/UMG?
  14. No Pedro Iturralde? Also, Tino Contreras is Mexican and most of his recordings were made in Mexico. the Dusko inclusion is a little weird too, with "Bosnia Calling," but at least he was part of the scene in Barcelona at one point.
  15. Good question. Home is awesome; I feel like it could use a remaster (rhythm section seems a little 'distant' on the LP) if possible, but the music is super. And the Roy Brooks is essential.
  16. oof -- hope he's ok. I knew he had a parent die in the last couple of years, with whom he was very close. moderna boost today, feel ok but will probably feel less ok tomorrow.
  17. ordered the LP set, curious as to how up to par the vinyl is. Been burnt on some major label pressings of late.
  18. Losing my Tampas this late in my career....
  19. if it were west coast jazz-focused and penned for our beloved Chewy, it could be titled "Send In The Crowns"
  20. Wow, this is great!
  21. Yeah, I love Expression. Some of the first Coltrane I ever heard. regarding the session with Marion Brown above, I'd also read that Marion played alto on some of it. Too bad that the session is probably completely lost.
  22. I agree, they're both excellent. I usually don't get too excited about the Wynton Kelly Trio with Cobb, but Joe seems to bring things up a notch.
