  1. yeah, for sure. And habits linked to personal stressors like being black and gay in America... recipe for a very tough life.
  2. Brooks has been described as being "effete," "slight," or "effeminate" and I wonder if his sexual orientation had something to do with being hired for jobs or given more attention by Blue Note at the time. I have a hunch that Brooks was gay, and while in today's jazz world it wouldn't matter so much, there was a time where it definitely would have. Anybody else catch this?
  3. I worked part time at a liquor store in college and the owner had an old Onkyo turntable set up, on which I played a variety of jazz records. Fun times. also, if jazz was heard at the seafood store, would it be "Jazz at the Prawn Shop" ?
  4. Otherwise known as Clifford Barbaro, drummer.
  5. no, cosmetic marks to the vinyl that don't affect play. That doesn't worry me too much. Sleeve damage sucks however.
  6. last one I remember returning was the Rollins in Holland, which had one incorrect LP as well as another LP that was scratched and played with surface noise. They were cool about replacing it. I do buy new release records; both at the high and the low end there are problems with manufacturing. As long as the issues are merely cosmetic I don't care, but if it affects the sound to a notable degree that becomes a problem.
  7. oh I know, one can dream however!
  8. or putting him together with Clifford Jordan in better sound than either the Strata-East or Zounds sessions
  9. Wild.
  10. unless there's more Sonny Clark on it... I'll pass.
  11. Nice. That is a good one.
  12. I could be off by some but it's not a super small run.
  13. I think the print run is like 3,000. Somewhere around there.
  14. missed this fascinating thread the first time around. Good work, all.
  15. yes, my friend Chris is responsible for making this happen. It's going to be incredible, totally next level.
  16. yeah, that's a good one. I have an old CD edition of it around here somewhere... Black Editions are doing a 3LP box set of 1970 Takayanagi recordings that PSF put out on CD roughly a quarter century ago. I assume some level of remastering will occur.
  17. Dug that one out recently after many years and it is pretty fun.
  18. Not the same as the Sound Creators LP. It's possible "Jha" is an excerpt from the 28 June concert not on the original LP, but I doubt it -- recording quality on the Sound Creators album is far better.
  19. I have those. Very heavy. The duo has the same music on both sides (the 12" reissue), albeit in mono and stereo. They probably could have done just fine issuing it as a single sided 12" mono recording.
  20. Not sure why he stopped recording -- he did reappear in 1977 with Hamiet Bluiett on an interesting date for Chiaroscuro.
  21. Hope he's getting psychiatric help.
  22. yeah, that's where I first became aware of him.
