Sad to report that the bassist Hakim Jami died on December 19 here in Kingston, NY. He was around 80 years old (I don't have a birthday handy, if anyone does that would be a help). He had a stroke a while back and was struggling, though apparently still playing privately. He was a major part of the lofts in NYC during the 1970s, and recorded with among others Archie Shepp, Ted Daniel, Don Cherry, Ken McIntyre, Roland Alexander, Sun Ra, and Hilton Ruiz. RIP.

Yeah, I'll have to listen closer to the Prestige but the Cleopatra date isn't far off and that has been confirmed to be Maneri. I could ask Mat next time I see him.

I used to have a Prestige blue label of this album, many years ago. I wasn't that into it and purged it without a second thought. Now, Eastern Sounds is one of the most desirable jazz albums among a certain set of collectors. I haven't listened to it in decades but part of me would not mind having that old copy just to cash in!

Awesome Elvin album. Haven't dug the Hutch out in many years but it is a fine one. Glad not to smoke anymore. Perhaps my favorite jazz smoking pic that isn't Joe Henderson:

I've had it a few times over the years but could never connect with it. Oddly all the copies I had were mono and I don't think I've ever seen a stereo pressing though it probably exists.

I'd like to hear some of this unissued stuff if it survives... really have grown to appreciate Jack Wilson in recent years. He's a beautiful player.
