What vinyl are you spinning right now??
clifford_thornton replied to wolff's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Okhela and Way It Goes/Dance of the Soul are two vinyl favorites, the latter a quartet with Bobby Bradford... Backwards & Forwards is also quite strong. Frode Gjerstad has released/supervised a number of archival Detail sessions on CD as well. -
MPS / SABA - Favourites and Recommended

This album was initially released privately as one of two Dauner records produced by Horst Rischka, and it was later reissued by Brain/Metronome. It was never on SABA or MPS. -

Yeah, Decipher is a great one too -- I do have that LP. Can't think of too many MPS/SABA records that are actual stinkers, to be honest. Auto Jazz is rad. He actually was field recording the race in which the accident happened. IIRC, the group later performed in museums with this soundtrack and visual accompaniment. Sort of a more grim "free jazz" exploding plastic inevitable, I guess? -

Surprised nobody has mentioned the two Nathan Davis and two Benny Bailey SABAs. For me those are crucial. Here are some more I enjoy. Barney Wilen - Auto Jazz, Dear Prof. Leary Irène Schweizer Trio/Manfred Schoof/Barney Wilen/Dewan Motihar Trio - Jazz Meets India Jef Gilson - New Call From France Joachim Kühn Trio - Bold Music Rolf Kühn/Phil Woods - The Day After Rolf Kühn - Devil in Paradise New Jazz Trio - Page One & Page Two Steve Kuhn - Watch What Happens Pedro Iturralde/Paco De Lucia - Jazz Flamenco Wolfgang Dauner - Free Actions Dusko Goykovic - As Simple As It Is George Gruntz - Noon In Tunisia (though there are perhaps better versions of Maghreb Suite out there) Hideo Shiraki Quintet - In Berlin: Japan Meets Jazz Enrico Rava - Katcharpari Hans Koller - Relax With My Horns -

Smoke is cool but the LP very expensive for what it is. -

That record is on Birth. Sure you're not thinking of Out Of New York (Hampel, Lee, Robinson, Gregg)? -
yeah, I don't have too many later ENJAs. One I wrote liner notes to was Holger Scheidt's Schwimmende Elefanten, which is a handsome and under-the-radar slice of contemporary jazz. The Steeplechase CDs of recent note for me were with Kirk Knuffke, Jesse Stacken, Ted Brown, Rich Perry, and Stephen Riley... but I guess those aren't even all that new.

According to London Jazz News and other sources online, German producer and co-founder of ENJA Records Matthias Winckelmann has died: https://londonjazznews.com/2022/06/20/rip-matthias-winckelmann-1941-2022/ Horst Weber, the other co-founder, died in 2012. Unfortunate news, interesting label for sure.

Yeah, I used to write for the NYCJR. I can't remember what the cost breakdown was for articles and it may have changed since then anyway. I take it you've been in touch with Laurence and/or Andrey? LWF pieces tend to be on the shorter side (shorter than Encores) but I've written a few. Message me if you need any pointers.

Good article, too.

Her MoMA retrospective was rad. She is important as is/was Fluxus -- it's fine not to be into it, but the movement and the art/performances/ideas were groundbreaking at the time. I like her music too and as a way to disseminate experimental art practices to the people, she found a way that was more successful than most. It was very moving to hear her speak at Ornette's funeral.

hope you're better ! -
Well, the 1963-04-26 date is a bit more specific, so that's pretty believable. Also, I guess Henri Renaud stopped gigging for some time, starting in 1964.

wow, hadn't seen that clip.

yeah, Intervall was the only one issued while he was alive. There are also a few tracks of his on that Oj Oj Oj soundtrack compilation, which was released circa '66.
-
Yep! Intervall is a minor classic (reissued on CD in 1992 and on LP in 2015). To me he sounds a bit like Bill Barron.
