  1. Will grip, thanks for the heads up.
  2. interesting. I guess they were partners when the record came out so he could license it... for what it's worth the original pressing came out on Mait Edey's SEEDS label. As that imprint was going out of business, Jeanne picked it up and issued it on her Earthforms label nearly concurrently.
  3. do you need to have a separate phono preamp to make this work? Both of my amps are integrated but I have noticed some funny stereo LPs that would do well to be folded down.
  4. ah, nice. I have the P-Vine LP. Excellent stuff.
  5. I have an original Polydor UK pressing of the Tchicai and that's how it was recorded. I always really liked the sonics -- the murkiness adds to the mystery. I don't think it could be improved upon too much.
  6. the Bo'Weavil is a needle-drop, yes? is it licensed?
  7. I would like to hear the quintet with Marion Brown. Wonder if a safety exists or if it's torched...
  8. In the words of the late Wolfgang Fuchs, and I paraphrase: "you can be terrible musician or you can be a terrible person. You cannot be both!"
  9. yeah, agree. He is a complete scumbag, that much seems obvious.
  10. wow! that's pretty cool. I only have one of his records, Encounter, on Three Blind Mice, which is excellent.
  11. Indeed. Had the great pleasure of seeing his rehearsal big band in New York over a fascinating weekend of open performances not too long before he passed. It was very open but also incredibly tight! Also saw him in duo with George Lewis, and solo. He seemed like an amazing person and my only regret is not having had the opportunity to sit down and interview him.
  12. years ago someone on here, maybe Jeff Crompton, sold an original copy in the "Offering and Looking For" thread for $10. Needless to say I tried but it was a goner! buddy's shop just sold one for $700, which might have been on the reasonable side considering how much it goes for now.
  13. yeah, I had one copy and indeed it had this fault. Sounded like garbage. Will look forward to this and the Mike Taylors for sure, and curious to see what else they might have coming out that isn't in my hoard already.
  14. Will definitely pick up Space Walk; I had that weird boot and the sound sucked. Wonder if they are shipping to the US?
  15. yeah, I talked to him the other day and that seems to be the case. Don't want to say too much here but if you have his contact info, do reach out to him.
  16. Alvin Fielder talked about seeing that band at the Plugged Nickel. Can't even imagine.
  17. JEEZ saw him a few times -- twice with Amina Claudine Myers and once with Dave Burrell a.o. at the Vision Festival. Great that this giant of the music is still with us and performing!
  18. yeah, those are really fine duos. I guess I'll keep my Passing Ships CD.
  19. Yeah, it's excellent. There are a few volumes of his work in the NoBusiness Chap Chap series as well. My understanding is that he played a lot in Japan and may have lived there as well (can't remember). I know I got my copy of Korean Free Music from a Japanese seller years ago and I feel like a lot of copies ended up there.
  20. and Japo was part of the ECM family, via Thomas Stöwsand (of Just Music).
  21. Yeah, indeed an excellent album. For what it's worth Shepp was playing straight-ahead throughout his career, left and right/up and down, and most of his LPs include at least one tune in a more standard vein.
  22. great photo; yours? I am trying to recall if I saw Mario in person. I saw Joe Fonda many times (and hope to again). They were both anchor bassists of the CMIF.
  23. According to reports on social media from his collaborators and colleagues, bassist/composer Mario Pavone passed away from cancer on Friday, May 14, at 80. Sad news, excellent player and a fulcrum in the Connecticut jazz scene. He was a significant part of the Creative Musicians Improvisers Forum in New Haven in the early 80s, and also worked with Paul Bley, Bill Dixon, Alan Silva, Anthony Braxton, Bobby Naughton, Thomas Chapin, Perry Robinson, and many others.
