  1. totally. there's no reason this material shouldn't be out already in one or two spots.
  2. awesome LP, dusted it off quite recently too.
  3. Sad to report that the bassist Hakim Jami died on December 19 here in Kingston, NY. He was around 80 years old (I don't have a birthday handy, if anyone does that would be a help). He had a stroke a while back and was struggling, though apparently still playing privately. He was a major part of the lofts in NYC during the 1970s, and recorded with among others Archie Shepp, Ted Daniel, Don Cherry, Ken McIntyre, Roland Alexander, Sun Ra, and Hilton Ruiz. RIP.
  4. Yeah, I'll have to listen closer to the Prestige but the Cleopatra date isn't far off and that has been confirmed to be Maneri. I could ask Mat next time I see him.
  5. Awesome, would love to check this out. I believe the saxophonist could be Joe Maneri.
  6. Yeah, it's interesting that it even came out on Blue Note at all. I love the CBBB and am glad it exists, though.
  7. Same. Love the real thing too and am lucky to live mere blocks from the CSX River Line in Kingston.
  8. yeah, I have stuff on either side of this that I like much better too.
  9. you're right about that. It's a good record and I actually don't mind the cover, but yes, sloppy assemblage there.
  10. ha, no disapproval of the "certain set," just never was my cuppa.
  11. I used to have a Prestige blue label of this album, many years ago. I wasn't that into it and purged it without a second thought. Now, Eastern Sounds is one of the most desirable jazz albums among a certain set of collectors. I haven't listened to it in decades but part of me would not mind having that old copy just to cash in!
  12. Awesome Elvin album. Haven't dug the Hutch out in many years but it is a fine one. Glad not to smoke anymore. Perhaps my favorite jazz smoking pic that isn't Joe Henderson:
  13. If it's done well or interestingly I don't mind if it's a common tune.
  14. I've had it a few times over the years but could never connect with it. Oddly all the copies I had were mono and I don't think I've ever seen a stereo pressing though it probably exists.
  15. I'd like to hear some of this unissued stuff if it survives... really have grown to appreciate Jack Wilson in recent years. He's a beautiful player.
  16. Vangelis made some good records though, including one with Brian Odgers and Tony Oxley. Aphrodite's Child is pretty sweet as well. New Age is a pretty wide range, much of it pretty interesting, and I would hardly put Laraaji or Schawkie Roth in the same category as the G. Yanni and John Tesh are commercial lite music and that's another thing entirely. G is sorta in there and sorta not.
  17. Cool.
  18. Bird Show Band -- s/t -- Amish good little record with Jim Baker, Josh Abrams, Dan Bitney, John Herndon, and Ben Vida.
  19. Damn. RIP.
  20. Anybody else have problems with the vinyl set? My LP 1 is unplayably warped and has a gouge at the end of one side. I wonder how easy it is to get a replacement disc from Verve/UMG?
  21. No Pedro Iturralde? Also, Tino Contreras is Mexican and most of his recordings were made in Mexico. the Dusko inclusion is a little weird too, with "Bosnia Calling," but at least he was part of the scene in Barcelona at one point.
  22. Good question. Home is awesome; I feel like it could use a remaster (rhythm section seems a little 'distant' on the LP) if possible, but the music is super. And the Roy Brooks is essential.
