  1. Hans Reichel - Bonobo - (FMP) Cecil Taylor & Tony Oxley - Ailanthus/Altissima: Bilateral Dimensions of Two Root Songs - (Triple Point) Steve Lacy - Ballets - (Hat Hut)
  2. I like this one: (Favre/Schweizer/Kowald)
  3. Ha, yeah I know what you mean. But they do require a certain weird "mood," at least for me. These are also four records with nearly the same personnel... It's funny, you know -- I was thinking "how many solo Derek Bailey LPs do I really need" but pulling out the Morgue the other day I was struck by how perfect it is compared to some of the others, and that sense of "perfection" can only be arrived at through experiencing the nuances of similar-but-different recordings.
  4. yeah, they are all pretty similar and enjoyable in their own weird way. Got Whirled Music, the Alterations on Bead, Choloagogues and a few others of this persuasion. The Lee is a nice palette-cleanser after all that weirdness! Now: Oliver Lake - Passing Thru - (Africa Pub., FR orig?)
  5. David Lee Jr. - Evolution - (Supernal, US orig)
  6. David Toop/Paul Burwell - Wounds - (Quartz, UK) nutty recent grab
  7. Interesting, thanks. Love the Thollot avatar by the way.
  8. Composer, violinist and filmmaker Tony Conrad died yesterday at 76 after a long battle with prostate cancer. I saw him perform once, at the De Stijl/Freedom From festival - solo amplified violin behind and in front of a white scrim lit by a single powerful bulb. It was really intense and my recollection was that there were not that many people in attendance (surprising, considering this was 2003 and he'd already gotten notoriety among the experimental/indie weirdo circuit). He worked in the '60s with La Monte Young and John Cale, in the early '70s recorded with Faust, and came to prominence in the 90s through collaborations with Gastr del Sol and others. Revisiting his work this weekend, it's strikingly beautiful and now I find it much easier to take in than I did 20 years ago. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/10/arts/artsspecial/tony-conrad-experimental-filmmaker-and-musician-dies-at-76.html
  9. Tony Conrad - Four Violins (1964) - (Table of the Elements)
  10. v/a - Music in the World of Islam 5: Reeds & Bagpipes - (Tangent UK orig)
  11. Träd Gräs och Stenar - Djungelns Lag - (Anthology Records US reissue from the boxed set)
  12. Musique d'Afrique Occidentale (Mandinka/Baule) - (Vogue Collection Musée de l'Homme, FR)
  13. Cyrille is the only one who's been on the scene long enough to fit the bill. Plus, he's had a significant and lasting influence on the others you mention. I guess Shepp is getting the nod this year, which is cool.
  14. Love the early stuff on up through the first couple of Impulse LPs. The rest was never anything I got into but he did what he did and with commitment. RIP.
  15. +1 now, Gato Barbieri - In Search of the Mystery - (ESP orig US)
  16. Booker Ervin - Heavy!! - (Prestige, blue label)
  17. The Remarkable C.J. was on Pacific Jazz, and that's probably the one you're thinking of.
  18. Liked her in the few things I saw her in and understand that she had numerous struggles throughout her life. However, I consider her a musical artist about as much as I do Kurt Russell, which is to say not really.
  19. Yeah, I believe it. I'd much rather have the Nessa CDs out there.
  20. I really only have a few small purge regrets. Sure, it would be nice to have x, y or z indie/punk/prog record but I'm glad to have other, presumably more rewarding things to listen to. That MEV on Horo is quite good, but so are a lot of things at the end of the day.
  21. I'd buy it if it existed. Are there more tracks from these sessions? Can't remember and am too lazy to look it up.
  22. I have a Japanese stereo pressing of that one - it's good. I'm intrigued by its existence on the label, as it was leased from Campi.
