  1. That African Bass record is excellent.
  2. Côte is quite good indeed. I have the Iowa Ear Music LP but it's been awhile since I gave it a spin. Will have to check for bcl.
  3. one of the best records out there.
  4. Yeah I thought there was a Japanese issue of it. The UK has a few poots and clicks, despite being very clean, but what can you do?
  5. oh yeah, thanks for the reminder - that's a great one! Haven't had that album in years, oddly...
  6. Ray Russell - June 11, 1971 Live at the ICA - (RCA Victor UK)
  7. Agreed. And so many repeats within those threads.
  8. I guess the aim of most recordings is to get reviews. There is no way most of the records reviewed in DB are selling in any kind of number to anybody - exception for the Jarretts and Methenys of course. In *that* respect the illusion of "the industry" is a prop for human effort, and in that respect (alone) the persistence of a lets face it - dull - review culture is laudable. Well, since mine are usually heavily fact/context-based, they're ultra-dull.
  9. At the same time, a well-written review in a newsstand circular is nothing to sniff at.
  10. agreed, I used to have those in lesser condition - didn't keep as I'd like to hear the music without a ton of surface noise.
  11. I think it's called your E-spot.
  12. I have a few CECMA records in the racks. The Ragin is one I'd like to hear.
  13. DB is pretty bad these days. This interview with Kenny Barron hardly talks about the scene in Philly in the '50s-'60s. He probably has some fascinating stories, but I guess it's better for the mag to spend time talking about what he's done in the last 5 years than the "old days." At least they kept in the text in Mazurek's interview about Bill Dixon but as I've spent time with both (in person) there's a lot more to the story than one or two lines.
  14. I have done this with both LPs and CDs numerous times. Or I thought something I had was in "VG" shape and upgrade, come to find that both copies are very clean and I have to sell or trade one of them. Gotta stop doing this... unless something is fried it's a waste of time.
  15. I doubt I can ever recapture the first experience of hearing Black Woman and being so incredibly stoned I could hardly walk afterward. Take that, Steve Hoffman!
  16. Of course it's about the medium. I've never been excited about finding a CD. And of course it's about the music. Most of my friends collecting records are musicians themselves. I have been super pumped to find some CDs. It's exciting to check out something you haven't heard before and be rewarded with the sounds contained therein. I also consider a lot of records to be art objects as well, and their look/feel is very attractive.
  17. Totally forgot about this one. It was on my list for a long time but I never found it. I guess I'll start looking again! I have this buried somewhere I think. Oy vey.

That's some funny stuff - thanks Larry. I have the Atlantic LP and it's a real strong set.
  19. Will get the Ork set too. That Half Japanese box is probably pretty sick - the first two volumes are insane - but they're also kind of expensive, if memory serves. Jad Fair is pretty amazing.
  20. I will try to pick up the Amanaz 2LP on Now Again (have the earlier Shadoks pressing, which may or may not be legit - I guess this version is legit and deluxe). Great Zambian psych from the '70s. Otherwise, not sure.
  21. only have a few of these, I think. The Lacy I have on LP - it's a really heavy session.
  22. That's a good one. Yeah, certainly seems to be on the first couple of listens. Enjoying the use of sitar, cellos and vocals. Makes me want to check out more Jay Clayton It's good. I have Bill Dixon's copy, which has a lengthy dedication from Marc to Bill. Glad it's in my collection.
  23. Mal Waldron - Blues for Lady Day - (Black Lion, UK)
  24. i would of bought that Curious date. It's been issued under a number of different titles and on several labels, the first being under Rocky Boyd's name for Jazz Time. I'm actually looking for the International Polydor version called "West 42nd Street" because I have a strange appreciation for that particular label...
