  1. so, back to the sound samples - the drums sound completely bizarre. Is there any way that this is just due to the compression that SoundCloud uses and won't reflect what's actually on the CDs?
  2. How is anybody ELSE to know in order to tell YOU? This is why I buy stuff based on the people whose opinions I trust saying something is interesting. Usually their tastes jibe with mine; sometimes they don't and I'm in for a (usually positive) surprise. So don't "tell" me anything, just keep talking about cool stuff and I'll find out. People like Allen Lowe, Paul Secor, Chuck, Jeff Crompton and sidewinder Bob have been great in helping me and others find out about artists we've never heard before.
  3. Damn. Guess I should adjust my eBay saved searches again.
  4. yeah, it's great. I have the India Navigation pressing, which probably doesn't sound as good as the Japanese LP.
  5. yeah, I have those on LP - really strong dates, especially fond of Variations on a Blue Line.
  6. It's actually over 40 years old! I thought I had it figured out this morning and then realized my next guess was wrong. Stumped on this. It's really quite wonderful. Knowing my luck, I probably have it in the racks and just forgot about it.
  7. Yeah, that's the thing: whether or not one "likes" this recording (or any recording) doesn't matter if the artist's conviction comes through. There are things I don't particularly "like" or "get" that I completely respect and feel no reason to denigrate.
  8. Still need both of the Pittner dates on Angelus. Very rare and almost always trashed when they come up for sale.
  9. neither a turd nor the writer (nor article) can be polished. Seems appropriate to me.
  10. Yeah, he's real good. And he's like 21 or 22, so hopefully he'll grow into his sound.
  11. No idea about 1-1. 1-3 sounds like someone who's listened to McLean pretty heavily, as well as some Gary Bartz. So it's someone of that ilk who I'm not placing for some reason. Sonny Fortune maybe? The drummer is tough. Some wonderful playing here. The pianist is odd and infectious. Whatever this is I need to get a copy. 1-5 has a nice inside-outside feel, though the theme is kind of annoying. The alto player sounds very familiar to me - Ken McIntyre is a thought, though I'm not convinced it's him. Whoever it is also quotes Ornette's "Ramblin'" very nicely at the end of his solo.
  12. couldn't find it doing a quick youtube search, but it sounds dumb and off-base.
  13. I dunno, but I'm learning it's nearly inescapable. A wise person said to me the other day, "life has occasional poots. Deal."
  14. Man, the drums sound like digital doo doo on these samples. Everything else is fine. What gives? God, one of these Errol Garner tracks is unlistenable.
  15. Oh yeah, I read this drivel a little while ago. Ugh. Max Harrison and Richard Williams are/were both very estimable jazz writers. I don't know Jack Cooke.
  16. He was a memorable bass player. He did some great things with Derek Bailey. He's an absolute monster on Steve Lacy's "stalks" album. Yeah, Stalks is the shit indeed.
  17. I've never owned any of their records but those first few Transmuseq LPs look cool.
  18. There are a lot of really sick looking soul and funk 45 labels, actually, but all of them are indie or custom jobs. That's not really my world but I have definitely encountered enough to make it seem like 45 label design wasn't in as fallow a period as this discussion would make it seem.
  19. I wish I had the Mosaic. I have the Candid (The World of) and Barnaby LPs, that's it.
  20. THANKS OBAMA
  21. Ind, definitely. Much of his work is still available from the Wave Records website. Red Mitchell too, both in California and with the Swedes... what a sound.
  22. I thought about grabbing that from Alan's list but I had other priorities (non-record-related). Assume you got it there? Looks like a great record. No, not from Alan so he may still have it. Very good indeed. You wouldn't be disappointed if you like the two musicians as I suspect you do. It's high intensity playing that somehow creates an almost graceful calm in places I got (or rather will get) Alan's copy , looking forward to hearing it. Bought on impulse that it'd be a good one. good move. I need to be more on the ball!
  23. He is indeed another great player. I think the thing about lists like this is that there are so many great ones it's hard to choose/remember them all.
  24. thanks!
  25. The hype is "kind of ridiculous."
