jazz brought me to him, actually. But yeah, what a big loss.

The Fischer is awesome. I agree, I probably wouldn't have picked one up were it not for Jonathan's involvement.

Such sad news - I really loved his music (and still do).

Well, to MG's point, Batman's already been covered by Sun Ra... Byard Lancaster was seemingly obsessed with "Somewhere over the Rainbow," which I associate with Disney. -
!! Yep! Agreed! He gets a lot of space to himself.

Your easier-to-guess pieces are still pretty obscure! -

Nice, just got a rip of that one. Usually when they come up for sale they're hammered! I love that set. Got a fairly affordable copy quite a while back. -

J.D. Parran! Does he play with a King Crimson vet on this one? We have a winner! And yes, he plays with Mr. Muir on this record. For me this is one of the more compelling Company titles along with the "epiphanies" 2LP. I have a lot of the Company records but not that one. I'll track one down. -
Difference between true and "Euro" Japanese Warner reissues
clifford_thornton replied to Daniel A's topic in Re-issues
yeah. None of the Vortex LPs I have sound particularly crisp although they are all very nice copies. -
I'd actually recommend more recent David Sylvian as fitting into your realm (Manofon is excellent), as well as some of the newer (albeit heavier) Scott Walker stuff. You might also get into cornetist Rob Mazurek's work, especially the Sao Paulo Underground (which I think is his most engaging small group). How much time have you spent with Robert Wyatt's catalogue? I would think that he'd certainly fit the bill - really anything from End of an Ear forward is essential listening.

Things Written On Used LPs You've Picked Up

Nipples is the only one of those three I listen to with any regularity. There's a nice warm-up session of The Living Music with Derek Bailey added. I do like that tune "Wave." -

Guess I'll hold onto my original Vortex LP then. -

I could have gotten the 1st issue for a reasonable price years ago, but was fine with what I had. Still am. -

Nah, white cover issue. I wish I had the original pressing but alas mine also has a white sleeve (tho the record is crisp). oh, my copy of Glenn Spearman's Night after Night LP has his autograph on the back, nice and discreet. AND I bought a near mint Liberty copy of Gyllen Cirkeln vol. 1 from an online seller back in the late 90s, and it wasn't noted in the description that there was a signature on the back.... from Ornette himself! haha -

will get the second edition when it comes out. I foolishly slept on it the first time around, which in retrospect is so absurd. -

yeah, normally I don't get autographs and avoid signed sleeves, but there are a few that "matter" to me. I've got a friend who collects autographs and has, for example, everyone but Buschi represented on European Echoes. -

I had Few sign my copy of his Center of the World LP, More or Less Few. He drew a big goofy smiley face on the cover. Priceless. Used to own a copy of the Cairo Free Jazz Ensemble that was gifted to the Sun Ra Arkestra Family from Hartmut Geerken (the leader). Record wasn't very good so I flipped it for over $500 bucks. The dedication was cool but being tight on cash and not being into the music, I was glad to send it overseas. I've got a couple of LPs dedicated to Bill Dixon from his collection. Steve Lacy wrote a nice note when I had him sign my LP of "School Days" - sweet guy. I have a copy of Frank Wright's "Eddie's Back in Town" dedicated to its former owner by the Reverend. He's one of my favorite saxophonists, so it's really special to have something that passed through his hands. -
yeah, Crouch definitely made friends where it politically suited him. Then again, Outlaws & Gladiators never came out, nor did his early '70s LP with Bobby Bradford and (IIRC) Arthur Blythe, so it's hard to tell how severe the pendulum's swing truly was. Reading his liner notes on the avant-garde records of the period, he was trying to connect that music with an earlier tradition. He certainly - in between bouts of homophobic ranting - seems to be on a similar linear trip with his UCLA lecture album (Ain't No Ambulances for No Nigguhs Tonight). FWIW I actually kind of like that album in a weird way. I had a CD copy of Baptised Traveller. Gave it to somebody for free I believe... have had a few vinyl copies over the years, they all sound like crap.

I love Nipples and More Nipples Less condensed and more open than TOTL Fair assessment, though I'd nitpick and say that a tune like "Dogmeat" is very much in line with 1969 Bailey/Bennink music. The recording is a bit crisper/not as "hot" as some of its ilk. Certainly of a more unruly bent than Oxley's CBS dates from the same period. I love hearing Parker on tenor and these early works are a great example of what he was up to on the instrument at that time. Speaking of Oxley, kind of amazed that Ichnos hasn't been reissued - surely his best LP, no?

What live music are you going to see tonight?
clifford_thornton replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I've got a disc of Evan Parker & AMM (with members of the Gunter Hampel Group for good measure) from 1972 and it's not very interesting. Too bad. -
I don't think I grasped Evan Parker when I first heard his music, either. But I've come to greatly admire his work. Topography is a great record, although I don't put it in the same category as later releases (Parker/Guy/Lytton forward). It's REALLY uncouth music! Like I said, put it alongside Nipples and the first few ICP records, they're of a piece.
