i.e., the second side of My Goal's Beyond. Really love records like Where Fortune Smiles and Extrapolation, as well as his appearances with Kenny Wheeler and Gordon Beck in the '60s. I can't say I get too excited about his hard-prog moves, though the above Indo-jazz excursions are pretty nice.

What vinyl are you spinning right now??

Hah, well you saved yourself some filing issues and a permanently splitting round cardboard apparatus. I've got crisp records inside of an object I have given up on trying to safeguard against encroaching preservation issues. -
Good deals. I have most of what I need in various other formats, otherwise I'd be biting.

The Ian Bruce Huntley tapes are all up in one place on Electric Jive & can all be downloaded - a wonderful accompaniment to the recently published book http://electricjive.blogspot.com.au/p/ibh-audio-archive-posts.html go to Audio Recordings well set out with a pic of the original tape/box Ian made with each session/s Oh my god. That looks incredible. Can't wait to dive into some of these sessions with Lissack, the brothers Beer, M. Goldberg, M. Pike and other obscuros.

Thanks for the tip on the Bread LP. Yeah, not collecting rock records actively frees me from most gimmix sleeves, though Nucleus' Elastic Rock does have a nice cutaway design. And then there's all the Breuker absurdity - chocolate boxes, jute bags, triangle sleeves, etc. Cool concepts but the chocolate box especially is a poorly-wearing design. Splits for days. -

Not really a follower of the band, but I like the gimmix cover version. I'm trying to think of another Elektra cover that was done as a gimmix, but am drawing a blank. -
Modern/Avant New Releases: A running thread
clifford_thornton replied to colinmce's topic in New Releases
It's an Uli Blobel production, so I think he has access to original recordings? I'd assume so. Perhaps previous issues were those he licensed out. Although I often wonder if anybody is getting paid w/ that outfit. F/E the new Peter Kowald box on Jazzwerkstatt looks nice, but leaves a funny taste. -

Generally a cheerleader for Moondoc, though because of other commitments I couldn't make the Vision gig. Glad to hear it was a good set. I actually have some problems with the new record, which is too bad because I wanted to like it. Maybe it is a grower. -
Imagine him singing "China Gate." What a legacy. Good that we had him this long. RIP.

Thanks, Ron - I agree with your statements about Orrin Evans. He's a good player but free music doesn't come naturally. I also feel that way about Eric Revis though many would disagree with my opinion there. I'm told that Branford Marsalis suggested he start listening to Peter Kowald, and the rest as they say is history... which is one of those apocryphal stories that just boggles my mind. -

Thanks Leeway. I only will have caught the Gayle and Brotzmann nights this year, so am curious to read your reports about the rest of it. The Die Like A Dog Trio was great last night, but I could have taken or left the rest of it. Missed Dalachinsky's reading. Thoroughly enjoyed the Gayle night though you're right, the idea of unaccompanied solos from the tentet was a bit hackneyed. When the band was going at it they were surprisingly "on." Bluiett was not there, however, although he was on the bill. I think Dave Burrell hampered the quartet performance; he's a good player though mostly on his own. It did not seem like he and Charles got in sync. But when he dropped out, things took off a bit. -
I hadn't seen those pics. Jesus, I gotta go.

Sorry to hear this. He spearheaded some wonderful sessions.

is it a needle-drop or something that sounds halfway decent?

^ Now THAT is at the top of my needs list. Nice. -
Yeah, those are excellent records. There is also the Mike Taylor Remembered LP put together by Neil Ardley in 1973 (though not issued until many years later).

Super well-said, Colin - thanks. I don't know much about Ran's music but often feel like I should investigate it more. -
