  1. Sorry to hear he is ailing - I knew he'd been in and out of institutions but was glad he was still giving it everything he had. A master.
  2. Yeah, it is cool. I picked one up maybe three years ago.
  3. Peter Evans Quintet - incredible sets at the stone.

  4. Peter Evans' Zebulon Trio.

  5. Chuck's recollections are fascinating. I have a mono Van Gelder of Edition 1 and a stereo Van Gelder of Edition 2. I've vacillated on which I prefer, and am glad to be able to hear and enjoy both.
  6. There's a night of a duo with Brotzmann. Not that Brotzmann's a shrinking violet... Interesting. That should be fun.
  7. Wow, that stinks, but as with the old BNBB, one can't shit where one eats I suppose. In other words, it's basically a company's forum for their own products and they seem to take themselves really seriously. As a seeker of vintage (or vintage-ish) pressings I've never had any use for Hoffman and related vinyl reissues, but they do sometimes look nice. 45rpm 12"s are something I remember from the punk/post-punk/indie era, but I don't think I have any that are longer than about 8 or 9 minutes a side (and a lot of those sound great). I think 14 minutes would be pushing it.
  8. It's on my to buy list when the new job starts. Can't get every new release for "review," obviously.
  9. The opening set of FONT last night at Roulette was amazing - Christian Wolff's Octet for seven brass instrumentalists and violin; Duo 6 for violin and trumpet; and Edges for nonet (brass, violin, and the composer at the piano). It's been a while since I've seen NY school composition performed live (even though Wolff is the youngest of that crowd and two of the pieces were very recent), and the music was beautiful. That Gareth Flowers is a monster classical trumpeter.

  10. Sorry, it just devolves whenever anyone talks about ECM and it gets really tiring to read. I, for one, would be happy to hear a new Snakeoil album, even if sometimes I prefer Berne in other settings.
  11. Wish I could make one of those. The concert at The Hill would be cool, but it's not exactly "art for the masses" at those prices.
  12. Unfortunate news, but a life fully lived.
  13. For pete's sake, people, there's a WHOLE where you can go to town on Snakeoil. Same old yapping. It's a nice record, band is more interesting live in my opinion, but WHATEVER.
  14. Isn't the Houston performance a vocal set? He's not playing as much guitar as he used to, right?
  15. Personally I like the idea of having three discs together, whether as a box or in a trifold sleeve. I think it would have more "oomph" that way in the marketplace, but I agree it's also an expensive proposition. Looking forward to the upcoming batches! I need to pick up Flight for Four, even if I've already got a fine LP of it. You've got my support in this endeavor.
  16. Hah! Me too - Fushitsusha: The Coryell Covers!
  17. Excited to reconnect with Dan Kozak on Facebook - many fond memories of his playing woodwinds in the "piano room" with my dad on keyboards during my youth. I remember he brought the late Cecil Payne to Topeka for the Coleman Hawkins Festival, though at that time I didn't know much if anything about jazz. For some reason Cecil's name stuck with me so when I got into the music more fully, I sought his work out (as well as Hawkins and so many others). The now-me wishes he could go back in time t...

  18. I have zero problem with this. Then again, I have a soft spot for fey Apostolic Studios psych rock from the late '60s. Bring on the Chris Hills! And as far as naked family album covers go, this is a classic:
  19. Dewey Redman - Look for the Black Star - (Fontana, Japan)
  20. Ochs, Dresser and Tarazov at the stone. No disrespect to the saxophonist and bassist, but Vladimir Tarazov is such a riveting and singular artist that it was practically a solo percussion concert with tenor and bass as "ornaments."

  21. I thought that the Wilbur Ware Institute was going to release the Blackwell date too. Guess that puts the kibosh on things.
  22. Yeah, my mom is especially into modern/contemporary art. Thanks! (I guess this turns into the "cool parents" thread)
  23. If you have the chance to see Richard Youngs live, I would say take it.
