The opening set of FONT last night at Roulette was amazing - Christian Wolff's Octet for seven brass instrumentalists and violin; Duo 6 for violin and trumpet; and Edges for nonet (brass, violin, and the composer at the piano). It's been a while since I've seen NY school composition performed live (even though Wolff is the youngest of that crowd and two of the pieces were very recent), and the music was beautiful. That Gareth Flowers is a monster classical trumpeter.

Excited to reconnect with Dan Kozak on Facebook - many fond memories of his playing woodwinds in the "piano room" with my dad on keyboards during my youth. I remember he brought the late Cecil Payne to Topeka for the Coleman Hawkins Festival, though at that time I didn't know much if anything about jazz. Ochs, Dresser and Tarazov at the stone. No disrespect to the saxophonist and bassist, but Vladimir Tarazov is such a riveting and singular artist that it was practically a solo percussion concert with tenor and bass as "ornaments."
