    Hi all, My parents will be in London from the 14-21 of September and are looking for good improvised music / jazz gigs. They're pretty open-minded. I'm not sure what's going on that week (if anything) and Time Out wasn't really too helpful, so I thought I'd ask here. Recommendations? I was hoping that the Convergence Quartet was playing at the Vortex but I guess that's not until October...

    Listening to Archie Shepp on The Way Ahead playing "Sophisticated Lady." What is it that whenever I hear the tune I think of Jeanne Lee singing it on Shepp's album Blasé? I first heard the latter in about 1998 on a reissue that Michael Klausman ordered for me at Love Garden. I suppose I would have heard them both around the same time, actually. Shepp in '69...

    Matt was sort of chuckling as he made some of his more intense statements; to me he seems quite self-aware, and in some ways (non-musically) appears to be saying "take what I say with a grain of salt." Very friendly and jovial. I apologize if that didn't totally come through in the interview. As for the Susie Ibarra thing, I remember the dust-up but never really delved too deep. A lot of NY musicians aren't fans or have had negative experiences with her, and I do get that she came on strong without working in the trenches too deeply. My favorite Ware drummers were Marc Edwards and Whit Dickey. I really liked hearing Parker with Denis Charles and Rashied Sinan on record, never saw him with either in person.

    Oh, he's Cecil through and through on those records. He hadn't met Sunny Murray yet and the rhythmic conception wasn't where it would be, but the improvisational arcs and purity of conception are 100% CT. I think that the Marian McPartland interview that's recently resurfaced in the share blogs is worth hearing, especially if one is new to the world of Cecil Taylor.

    I haven't listened to an LP on Blue Note in lord knows how long. Got hundreds of Blue Note albums on vinyl and CD, but they've just been shelved lately for whatever reason. On deck now: beautiful-sounding Liberty blue/white first edition of Jackie McLean's "Demon's Dance" with Woody Shaw, Scotty Holt, Lamont Johnson and Jack DeJohnette. Sublime.

    The Jazz Couriers - The Message from Britain - (Jazzland, stereo) not the greatest pressing (looks strong VG++, plays pretty noisy) but musically excellent.
