  1. Huh - didn't know of this J.C. Moses appearance. Interesting.
  2. Talibam! - Puff Up the Volume - (Critical Heights)
  3. I dreamt that I saw a duet of JR Monterose and Wim Overgaauw playing at the Menil Collection. Afterward I went up and told them how "spectral" it sounded. They both laughed (of course, they would have been ghosts).

  4. Rein de Graaff w/ J.R. Monterose & Jon Eardley - Body and Soul - (Munich)
  5. Togashi/Sato/Midorikawa - CPU - (Denon)
  6. Fred van Hove & Cel Overberghe - Een Tweede Vogel - (Vogel) Including a rather amusing (conceptually) and interesting trio for tenor sax, bass and drums, all played by Overberghe as the result of overdubbing.
  7. Really wonderful set tonight at DMG from Ted Daniel and the International Brass & Membrane Corps. One of the bands I'd hoped to see upon moving here, and they were great. They utilize the framework of King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band (1923) for contemporary leaping-off points. I would think that few current approaches to this particular music emphasize the compositions' inherent eccentricity, and my breath was taken away by the tightrope walks that the musicians encountered/engendered, both in ...

  8. I like it and would recommend it to fans of this kind of music. It's really well-recorded, for one thing, and Guy is very much on point.
  9. I believe that some of it is recollected in Art Taylor's interview with Philly Joe, and that Zappa fucked everything up they had going music-wise.
  10. Strata / Strata-East are entirely different things.
  11. I'd like to own an original of the Myrick. I have the Contemporary Jazz Quintet "Location" and Sphere "Inside Ourselves" albums, and used to have the Maulawi (didn't like it much).
  12. Correct.
  13. George Russell - The Outer View - (Dutch Fontana pressing, Marte Roling cover)
  14. Amen, Brother Sangrey! Before I'm interested in a person's music, he has to sound like himself. (Or she/herself.) That's more important than if they're playing chord changes or not. The above is not a review of Mr. Marsalis' album, which I haven't heard. Right-o.
  15. Dick van der Capellen - The Present is Past - (Relax)
  16. Yeah, it's not totally my cuppa either but I support the program/idea and will pick up the unissued material for sure.
  17. Yeah, I've been buying from Tom at Jazz Record Revival for many years.
  18. Dang, sorry to hear this. RIP.
  19. Petting kitties, holding babies and free jazz - three of my favorite things.

  20. Talibam! - Puff Up the Volume - (Critical Heights)
  21. Slowly putting together a list of duplicates and so forth on Discogs. If you're not as condition-obsessed as I am, you might find some deals under the seller name "callen." Fair trades from facebook friends/fellow geeks welcome.

  22. Ritual All 7-70 - T'Other Little Tune - (ESP)
  23. The People Band - s/t - (Transatlantic)
  24. I assume it's new; it's the same band as Trio Live but "The Crust" and "The Duck" appear to have different timings and the rest of the tracks are different.
