  1. Hey JC Al, didn't realize you were on this board. Interesting story. I have yet to see the doc, but his music is pretty outstanding.
  2. Aha, yes - the bass duo LP. Another elusive beast. That one's good. Also much love for the Peter Kowald bass duos - Barre Phillips, Maarten Altena, and Barry Guy.
  3. I guess it's pretty short; they'd have to pair it with something else. Perhaps the Philly Joe + Jef Gilson LP?
  4. Sorry, that's actually Bengt Nordstrom - Natural Music (Bird Notes 2, 1968) The Lystedt looks like this: Sorry to nitpick but the Nordstrom is one of my faves!
  5. Yeah, they're all out as Japanese pressings, right?
  6. Black Unity is a hell of a record indeed.
  7. Glad they're reissuing Tilt, but still no Zodiac?!
  8. Re: Bill Dixon, the 7-tette (1964, Savoy) has Hal Dodson and David Izenzon. Apparently Izenzon had a lot of trouble with his part, though I'm not able to recall why. After all, he was a competent classical bassist back then. The score for "Winter Song" is pretty meaty - Down Beat reprinted it at one point. There are also two bassists on Intents & Purposes, Reggie Workman and Jimmy Garrison. Dixon often liked to use two basses in complementary textural roles, which I assume was a way to "spread out" the sound, especially when working with a small group. Brötzmann: Kowald and Niebergall on Machine Gun, to name just one recording. They were also two of the bassists in several Globe Unity recordings. John Carter/Bobby Bradford: Self-Determination Music had Henry Franklin and Tom Williamson on basses to excellent effect.
  9. New York Art Quartet - s/t - (ESP, red label stereo)
  10. Yeah, those FD records are killer. Glad to see there is a very real possibility they'll be properly done in the digital era. Thanks Jonathan.
  11. Codeine - The White Birch - (Sup Pop/Numero, LP2) From the "complete recordings" boxed set When I See The Sun.
  12. Yeah, without the composer/interpreter present... I mean, seeing Ted Brown play his earlier compositions is one thing. Or extraordinary young musician-composers working through a few classic lines toward "another side." But...
  13. Tempted to take the plunge on the HRS set but I'm tight for the next week or so. The prices are totally reasonable.
  14. Sorry to hear this - RIP.
  15. O to be a fly on the wall...
  16. Didn't the guy know that Ascension also came in LP format?
  17. Blackjack is an excellent album. Grabbed a super-clean original stereo in Austin for $9.99 - needless to say I was pleased.
  18. That reminds me, I gotta tell my buddy to fix that site - there's an error.
  19. Mine's en route; looking forward to it.
  20. That's the one of those Phonogram/Fontana CDs, along with Touching, that I see around on eBay, etc. I'll keep an eye out for you. It's a great record. Do you do Discogs? None currently offered there but I feel like I have seen it on that site in the past...
  21. "What More Can I Say" is great. Thought he found the in-between perfectly. I do enjoy Gong but some of that stuff is pretty silly. The Softs - even with Jenkins helming the show - were always fascinating, but I agree, it could get chops-y as wonderful as the "jazz" records are.
  22. Baikida Carroll - Orange Fish Tears - (Palm)
  23. I'm of the mind that the Marte Roling cover was only used on the Japanese LP/CD issue. Never saw an original Dutch or English press with that cover, only the Jazz Life jacket. Same with Bley's "Blood" as well.
  24. In that case I don't expect to get a reply from them... Charging $15 - $16 for bootlegs is a disgrace in my view - but I'm probably being naive... Yeah, it's pretty disgusting and honestly, I don't see who's paying for them - most of those titles one could easily find in FLAC format online, for free! What's weird is that apart from their bizarre used item markup and these homebrewed bootlegs (from the owners' record collections), they're a great store. Just to reiterate, they make these in house, in the back room.
  25. Sad news indeed. RIP, and thanks.
