  1. What a "rhythm" section! Bet those are strong and steamin'.
  2. I used to have the Melis LPs on Black Saint. They were decent but I never found myself really returning to them. The Dickerson, however, is great. Also recommended:
  3. Yeah, that's the first issue. I have a later pressing from the AEC years. But whatever - either way, great record.
  4. Tasty!
  5. So the sound on Spotify kind of sucks. First time user here.

  6. Well, aren't the Vocalions technically out of print (though still circulating)?
  7. Benny Goodman, clarinetist and Benny Goodman, British jazz drummer
  8. That is a reasonable deal, should someone be on the fence.
  9. ^ouch. Yeah, frightening story and not too hard to imagine happening. Glad he's okay.
  10. Yeah, I realized I was never going to go above a Cat 3, went to grad school and developed a gut. Still follow the sport to some degree, but not with insiders' fervor.
  11. Vaughters is dubious, from what I understand. But anyway, here's his NYT op-ed. A former training buddy of mine has this to say about Danielson (whom I'd never even heard of).
  12. Though Clay did woodshed with Ornette and Cherry during his LA stint in the mid-50s... Right, didn't Cherry play piano in one of Clay's outfits during that time?
  13. Celebrity sightings in Lower Manhattan tonight: Macaulay Culkin and Joe McPhee. The latter was certainly more interesting.

  14. Anybody here had positive experience restructuring student loans? Any suggestions are welcome.

  15. Yeah, that's an excellent LP.
  16. I believe it was one of the Columbia Landsowne LPs when issued in the UK; Serenus is mostly a classical label, I think. Looks like sealed copies pop up on eBay fairly frequently for not too much bread.
  17. That Baby Dodds set looks killer. I have a later Folkways 10" of the material, but I love that drawing on your copy.
  18. The presence of Don Garrett is intriguing.
  19. Anybody ever been to the Spectacle Theater? How early should one arrive for a show?

  20. Sending positive vibes to the ailing Dutch/South African saxophonist Sean Bergin. Missed probably my only chance to ever see him in the flesh, playing a Whole Foods in Austin a few years ago... a great musician, I highly recommend checking out some of his recordings.

  21. Shit. I knew he'd been very ill (diabetic?) for some time.
  22. I thought the reissue was now OOP. Anyway, it's a great record that should be in any "free jazz" fan's collection. And yeah, it's Juma Sultan on there, not Santos.
  23. That's too bad. RIP.
