    Ooh, I haven't heard the '68 concert w/ Sharrock & McLaughlin. There's one I'm looking for with McLaughlin and Han Bennink, too, but I don't think it's the same material. 8th of July is a classic, and I'm also very fond of the Wergo and ESP LPs. Hampel's a fascinating character.

    I have word that the excellent drummer Tom Bruno has passed. A leading light of criminally underground music in the 1980s and '90s, he worked often with Ellen Christi as well as the trio/quartet TEST (w/ Daniel Carter, Sabir Mateen, Matt Heyner) and played with Cecil Taylor. TEST performed literally underground as part of Music under the Streets in the NY subways. He'll be missed.

    I am hopeful that the news of the passing of reedman Byard "The Thunderbird" Lancaster and drummer Tom Bruno is untrue. This celestial orchestra is getting too big to deal with.

    According to Nate Chinen on twitter, the fascinating and very original reedman Byard Lancaster has passed. He had just turned 70. More news when it becomes available. To me he'll always be one of the "young ones" of the post-Coltrane avant-garde, even though he's my dad's age.

    I like this date quite a bit - it's grown on me over time. Nice and tight. This strikes me as kind of ridiculous and presumptive re: other musicians, as far as quotes go...

    Here's a short piece I wrote on Marzette for the NYC Jazz Record: Watts also appeared on unissued recordings from Clifford Thornton and the Jazz Composers' Orchestra and The Orchestra of the University of the Streets (under the direction of Bill Dixon). Both "Lonely Woman" and "octobersong" are on the Savoy LP, which is excellent.

    I believe the one you're referring to is "Inversions" on Muworks Records. It's from 1992, and is worth the search. Sadly, it's out of print, but should be relatively easy to find. Good to know; of course, the Boxholder is long OOP by now as well.

    That particular Clarke-Boland LP is one of my favorites. I've got quite a bit of their work, and others might disagree with me (the Ronnie Scott's sessions, the Atlantics, and Faces also slay), but I come back to Off Limits a lot.
