  1. I had that LP at one point but it was a fairly battered copy. Should seek out another, more listenable vinyl of it at some point. Apparently some recordings were made with Odean Pope for Atlantic but they were lost in the infamous warehouse fire.
  2. Yeah, got that LP and Hot Line from Dusty a while back. Great stuff; they pop up on eBay on occasion but not cheaply.
  3. On the air in just over two hours with The Cutting Edge - KOOP 91.7 FM playin new piano music and the like. Please tune in if you can.

  4. Who has two thumbs and won round trip tix to Chicago on Amtrak, courtesy of National Train Day? This guy.

  5. I believe that pianist Mike Kull was the house-trio leader for a resort/club in the Catskills for many years. Maybe he still is. He's on some of Joe McPhee's first records, btw.
  6. Was surprised to score this sealed for $10 on ebay with no contest: I'm sure you have it. I'm really enjoying it. I like Lacy best in a trio, and also love Steve Potts. Throw in "Blinks", "Stamps" and "The Throes" and I'm sold! That Adelphi Jazz Line has/had some really nice stuff. Also, amen - Flakes is a great one!
  7. I'm particularly fond of Ascent, but all of the solo/trio/augmented trio ones are real fine.
  8. I probably haven't seen it since the early 1980s, but I have to say even with the bad transfer, Convoy still holds up.

  9. Cool, thanks for bringing this to light, Jeff!
  10. Despite the presence of intelligent criticism of his improvisational choices, I generally have no problem with Phil Woods and tend to like his albums. This includes hearing him with Nick Stabulas and Teddy Kotick as well as Daniel Humair and Henri Texier. I do need to get more of the Phil/Quill chases on disc, though. Most 'heads' I know look at me askance when I say I dig Phil Woods, as though my jazzbo license is gonna get revoked.

  11. Despite intelligent criticism of his playing, which I can see as being part of the equation, I generally have no problem with Phil Woods and tend to like his albums. This includes hearing him with Nick Stabulas and Teddy Kotick as well as Daniel Humair and Henri Texier. I do need to get more of the Phil/Quill chases on disc, though.

  12. Phil Woods - Musique du Bois - (Muse)
  13. Oh man - the great Portuguese pianist-composer Bernardo Sassetti has died at 41 in what sounds like a hiking accident. Way too young to go. His Clean Feed albums are tremendous.

  14. Yeah I remember the $5,600 one. Was that Fred Cohen or the Music Matters guys selling it? I can't remember.
  15. The excellent Portuguese pianist/composer Bernardo Sassetti died at 41 in what sounds like a hiking accident. His albums on Clean Feed are all worth seeking out. Info here (in Portuguese). RIP - way, way too young to go.
  16. America and Africa connected to an IV drip/umbilical cord, leading to a nebulously-shaped African-American fetus. Looking at the lineup this seems like my kind of disc, so I'll have to find a copy.
  17. What a great cover on that Ware album!
  18. You can stream a little bit of the rare Nicaragua No Pasaran bootleg LP over at Destination:Out if you're so inclined. Scarce LP - never owned a copy - but the performance sounds, from what I can tell, like a fine one. Also, for the streaming or the downloading, is an archival/unreleased FMP orchestra session that I haven't gotten to just yet, but it looks impressive.
  19. I was just trying to say he's not really a "jazz" pianist, or connected to it in the same way that Cecil is, but he's real good.
  20. I'd expect it to double that at least.
  21. Be careful drizzling tamari whilst downing a beer. Your motions might get carried away on that kale you just steamed. Blecch.

  22. Hah - forgot about that.
  23. Was spinning: Birigwa - Birigwa - (Seeds) Boston-based Ugandan folk singer backed by Stan Strickland, Art Brooks and Mait Edey. Now spinning: Kenny Wheeler - Song for Someone - (Incus, black label)
  24. Same here! He's good. With his music, I see the piano as an expressive tool divorced somewhat from Tradition, but with energy and soul to spare. He's also a very nice person. Plays with Mike Watt (Minutemen)!
