  1. ^ouch. Yeah, frightening story and not too hard to imagine happening. Glad he's okay.
  2. Yeah, I realized I was never going to go above a Cat 3, went to grad school and developed a gut. Still follow the sport to some degree, but not with insiders' fervor.
  3. Vaughters is dubious, from what I understand. But anyway, here's his NYT op-ed. A former training buddy of mine has this to say about Danielson (whom I'd never even heard of).
  4. Though Clay did woodshed with Ornette and Cherry during his LA stint in the mid-50s... Right, didn't Cherry play piano in one of Clay's outfits during that time?
  5. Celebrity sightings in Lower Manhattan tonight: Macaulay Culkin and Joe McPhee. The latter was certainly more interesting.

  6. Anybody here had positive experience restructuring student loans? Any suggestions are welcome.

  7. Yeah, that's an excellent LP.
  8. I believe it was one of the Columbia Landsowne LPs when issued in the UK; Serenus is mostly a classical label, I think. Looks like sealed copies pop up on eBay fairly frequently for not too much bread.
  9. That Baby Dodds set looks killer. I have a later Folkways 10" of the material, but I love that drawing on your copy.
  10. The presence of Don Garrett is intriguing.
  11. Anybody ever been to the Spectacle Theater? How early should one arrive for a show?

  12. Sending positive vibes to the ailing Dutch/South African saxophonist Sean Bergin. Missed probably my only chance to ever see him in the flesh, playing a Whole Foods in Austin a few years ago... a great musician, I highly recommend checking out some of his recordings.

  13. Shit. I knew he'd been very ill (diabetic?) for some time.
  14. I thought the reissue was now OOP. Anyway, it's a great record that should be in any "free jazz" fan's collection. And yeah, it's Juma Sultan on there, not Santos.
  15. That's too bad. RIP.
  16. If Anthony invites you to Red Lobster, that means he likes you!
  17. Interviewed Juma Sultan and Bettina Richards in the course of one week. Music is really funny sometimes.

  18. Who in the NY area wants an 8 x 10 foot (approx.) beautiful, machine made Oriental rug? Free to a good home, very clean and in excellent shape. Dark blue, red, orange and tan pattern - Morton Feldman would be pleased. I just don't have room for it so if you want it, come by and pick it up!

  19. If it was the late 60s, they would have been private "BRO" issues, which FMP reissued on LP in 1972. Pretty cool nonetheless! I'm getting that musician run-in thing going on in NYC. Fond memories of that about a dozen years ago when I ran into Leroy Jenkins on the street in the VIllage and had a nice stroll and conversation with him.
  20. Looks like The Bastards have some of the older releases in stock that had been hard to find - specifically a couple of the Garricks that I slept on.
  21. Shooting the breeze with Daniel Carter in line at Trader Joe's...

  22. FD reissued the Birth/Natural Jazz private issue, which was and is Hampel's label.
  23. Ooh, I haven't heard the '68 concert w/ Sharrock & McLaughlin. There's one I'm looking for with McLaughlin and Han Bennink, too, but I don't think it's the same material. 8th of July is a classic, and I'm also very fond of the Wergo and ESP LPs. Hampel's a fascinating character.
