To be clear, the drummer was punched out by an unruly club-owner. I'd say the fault goes with the assault(er).
The University of the Streets is a NYC organization that has done music programs with the underserved and underrecognized since the late 1960s. However, it seems like the promoters are behaving pretty horribly towards the musicians.
From facebook, apparently a vocal disagreement with a pay-to-play clause (possibly obscured in the contract?) got a drummer punched in the face by the promoter's son... stitches and bruises later, he seems to be okay but the question of hostility at this particular club has been raised. I suggest that the word be put out about both this policy - $50 if the door minimum isn't made - as well as abusive behavior on the part of the club owners at the University of the Streets. Not cool.
I tried to bring this up a while back and it didn't seem to garner much interest then. Glad it's getting its legs now, because it's a subject that I am interested in.
Outing the living is one thing, but Allen is right with regards to history.
Because being comfortable/open about one's own sexuality (if it's not hetero-normative) is still a challenge to many, coming out has broader implications than one's own small sphere.
Yeah for some reason I've never bothered to buy that on LP - dunno why, considering it was such a priority to get the related Graham Collier discography on vinyl!
How is the pressing on the Beckett? Some of those Philips jazz titles have been a bit "crackly" in my experience, even when ostensibly mint-.
Yeah, I bet it's cool. Agreed - BN seems more interested in releasing drivel like Jeff Bridges than anything from the vaults (or even really strong contemporary improvised music).
I really like that one and don't find it too "ECM-y." Doctor Too Much rules - I also dig Positions 3-6-9 with Jerome Cooper (it's his date) and Kalaparusha.
I have the LP but am still into the idea of having it on CD for the extra track, mastering, and convenience. Wait, did I just say what I think I said? Plus, more words on the Nessa Juggernaut are due soon.
Yeah, I've seen him a few times and it's always been really good. He's a really nice guy, so I'm sure you two will have a blast. You should find out if those tapes of Cadentia Nova Danica with Musica Elettronica Viva are ever going to see release!
