  1. Oh shit. That's terrible news. When I first started getting into British jazz, he was a name I turned to - if he was on a session, it was sure to be excellent. Such a warm tone, but with a lot of virtuosic fire that served him (& the music) well in both free and straight-ahead contexts. RIP.
  2. Great story! I wouldn't have minded meeting Kari Wuhrer either. The Cutting Crew sucked.
  3. Shit, that's sad news. I really liked that show when I was young.
  4. Looking forward to this. But I'm confused - V. 1 will be a disc and V. 2 will be vinyl? No worries, I can listen to both!
  5. vinyl on the iPod: Bill Barron - Motivation - (Savoy) Still looking for an original of this one. I think it's his strongest Savoy date.
  6. But if you don't already have the material, it's the way to go.
  7. I thought it was the Mascara Snake.
  8. Tag-teaming between reviewing CD tracks for a guest radio spot and jamming A.R. Penck records.
  9. The wonky amateur video makes this whole experience for me.
  10. Potts had a couple of LPs of his own without Lacy, also had sideman turns with Robert Wood, Francois Tusques, and others. Excellent player. I agree with Chuck about the sound on these Novus sessions and it was troubling enough that I didn't keep the ones I bought. Also, FWIW, the Lacy-Waldron on Japanese Victor, mentioned earlier, is a quartet. It's very good.
  11. Ah, so that's what the "add to cart" thing is for. I figured you just paid to watch the longer ones on your computer. I found a number of things that would be worth buying on DVD for $10...
  12. It's a really cool record. I also was turned onto it recently by our own "dumpy mama."
  13. Pausing the suckers to get them to buffer seems to work. The sound is a little "transfer-y" like a lot of the NPR podcasts, but it's not every day you get to watch Joachim Kuehn, Jacques Thollot and Earl Freeman jamming!
  14. Bitch Magnet - Umber - (Communion)
  15. I really need to get my review turned in on this one.
  16. I thought I'd read/heard somewhere that Ron Carter WAS the most-recorded.
  17. I need to re-listen to that one. The tune everybody talks about on the Pepper is the Ornette cover.
  18. I can't imagine a later MPS or Crystal Jazz repress breaking the bank. It's usually the Saba and 1st MPS that go for money.
  19. The Alfred Harth-helmed cooperative Just Music will be celebrating their 40th anniversary, or at least of the issue of their ECM LP in Frankfurt this December. Also on the bill: Christian Marclay and Carl Stone. If you're in the area and are interested in free music, it'll be worth checking out. Alfred's a friend of mine, so I gotta plug. Wish I was going... Link
  20. Yes, feel better! I was thumbing through the "B's" in the jazz vinyl today and saw Bixieland. Thought of you, naturally!
  21. Benny Bailey - Mirrors - (Freedom UK) Jimmy Giuffre 3 - Trav'lin' Light - (Atlantic, mono)
  22. I did and never got a reply...
