  1. Warren Smith also played on Jerry Moore's Life is a Constant Journey Home LP on ESP. Also a folky sort of thing. Jay Berliner was on some Gil Evans discs, IIRC. Maybe Mingus too.
  2. Hope it's okay to post a link to my review of the Bradford/SME set here. AAJ review Looking forward to the next batch!
  3. Seems like some bad luck has gummed up the works:
  4. In Austin: End of an Ear... excellent, excellent shop and not surprisingly, the owners are big Robert Wyatt fans. Ah, too bad he's gone. I remember walking in randomly on a visit and talking to the owner. Very nice guy and a pretty sick grip of stuff. He gave me a deal on some hard-to-find Japanese pressings and a few odds and ends.
  5. Kondo is wonderful on those FMP discs, but I don't feel that Roy was trying to fill any shoes at Fire in the Valley.
  6. Agreed. I have a white label mono that's awesome.
  7. I don't get memos. That's not what my secretary is "for."
  8. Speaking of Minny , what about Oar Folkjokeopus ? That's now Treehouse - not a Roy Harper reference, unfortunately. Roadrunner Records I also liked, as well as Hymie's Records.
  9. NPR online tribute here.
  10. I like that one also. Would have liked to hear the Dollar Brand group w/ Byard Lancaster, Walter Booker and Milford Graves.
  11. Yeah, my parents saw them in '67 or '68 opening for Charles Lloyd. Was Phillip in the group then?
  12. I saw him with the re-formed Revolutionary Ensemble a few years ago. It was great, and he sounded tremendous. He had a broader sonic conception than he's given credit for. Artistry is a great LP that demands reissue.
  13. My experience of Amacher's work has been of being startled and perceptually rearranged. I suppose that's all any musician/composer/artist can hope for. 66 is too young to go.
  14. Sirone RIP? Damn!
  15. Happy Birthday! (Sorry we weren't able to get together in Austin)
  16. Sorry, typed "problem" when I meant to type "argument." I mean, Ran Blake isn't the only person to have approached openness with conviction.
  17. Sounds interesting. I've never heard of it either. But if Chuck Nessa is listening to it, that's a good recomendation to say the least! I saw Phillip Wilson a number of times with Braxton -- he was always so swingin' -- very earthy. What a vibe. We always thought it must be that St Louis grit. I just found this disco: http://www.discogs.com/artist/Phillip+Wilson The late Johnny Dyani, another great loss. He made some beautiful records: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&a...0ifexqt5ld0e~T1 Fruits is a very cool record. I would have loved to see Phillip Wilson.
  18. I don't think, perhaps, that I completely understood the reference to solving the "freedom problem."
  19. A criticism of Charles Lloyd and moldy figs. To me, Ran Blake is Ran Blake, not standing in for any greater aesthetic problem or solution.
  20. What's the "freedom argument?"
  21. The duo ("Blue Monk") with Ted Dunbar on Peruvian Blue is astounding.
