  1. Impressive and wonderful LP, but not one I pull out that often. It's an easy recommendation to see what Parker is, in some sense, "about," but if you're looking for an easier pathway there are other records. Perhaps you'd like Conic Sections more - I seem to remember a sense of delicacy in that disc though it's been a while since I've heard it (and unlike Chuck and Larry, one hearing doesn't seal it in memory). The quartets with George Lewis retain a broad sense of sound/movement as their modus operandi, but "group melody" has a way of emerging. The duets with John Stevens are great as well in that same vein. I would try The Longest Night on Ogun or the early archival material that Emanem has issued. FWIW, I've always found it easier to listen to his tenor playing. And there is nothing wrong with just not being all that into someone.
  2. You'd do well to listen to Kelly Rossum. Fine inside/outside player from Minneapolis who has just relocated to NYC. Lots of excellent contemporary trumpeters, though some of the ones I'd immediately point out hew closer to the avant-garde end of things. You might dig cornetist Josh Berman - excellent player, and his Old Idea firmly updates the in-betweenness of mid-60s Blue Notes, albiet chunkier and more fractured.
  3. Bedhead - Beheaded - (Trance Syndicate) of course, there's very little "trance" on the Trance Syndicate label...
  4. Nice one, Jeff. Now: Schweizer/Nicols/Leandre/George Lewis/Gunter Sommer - The Storming of the Winter Palace - (Intakt)
  5. Not that particular one, but Japanese Vertigo LPs are very hard to find!
  6. Too bad. I know a couple of people who played in his backing bands. Seems like he had a tough time with all of life's hardships, and didn't quite come out the other side. RIP
  7. I wouldn't get it for Grachan - my recollection is that most of his appearances are in fleshing out thematic material. It's still probably their best CD, and Denis Charles sounds awesome.
  8. Just in time for the holidays and the new year. Good to see you back & on the road to recovery. Cheers!
  9. That's true, for some of them at least.
  10. Guess I oughta get the Mosaic select...
  11. Curtis Amy & Frank Butler - Groovin' Blue - (Pacific Jazz, UK Vogue pressing) Tremendous session, bought recently & arrived in today's mail.
  12. Agreed! Judging from Mike's discography, I NEED that Dragon CD. Dayum...
  13. Isn't he? Saga of the Outlaws sent me on Tyler binge. I hadn't listened to him in a fairly long time, and had him in the back of my mind as just a very good Ayler-wannabe. Now my appreciation has really deepened. Tyler has a beautiful and unique approach that is all his own, especially in blue pitch shadings. Indeed, I don't have his later work, which I need to get a hold of. The Nessa, Ak-Ba, and Mustevic stuff (not to mention Sixty Minute Man) is all stellar. I've had the theme from "Voyage from Jericho" in my head for days, since last spinning Live in Europe. Love the cover photo on Missing Link.
  14. A download for me as well. I'm going to try to start participating in BFTs a little more (esp. as I'm doing one in 2010). Looking forward to it, Jeff!
  15. Nice!
  16. I hope to be a Groovisimo by that point.
  17. I too got confused & thought the thread was about the great altoist. Well, RIP to one who was obviously a British jazz institution.
  18. Charles Tyler is awesome.
  19. Damn, Deeley, that's a serious habit! I don't *think* I've bought that much in 09...
  20. Hey all, I've signed on as a co-host for The Cutting Edge, adventurous jazz programming on Austin community radio. We are on Sunday nights from 7 to 8:30 (Central Time), myself and primary host Rick Kendrick alternating weeks. I did some college radio as an undergrad as well as a little dabbling at WNUR while I was in grad school. Needless to say, I'm still a bit rusty and blubbery, but luckily there's a seasoned vet around to keep it all in line. KOOP streams live on the web here and our facebook page is here. Thanks!
  21. Lunchtime spin of a recent acquisition: Bill Barron - Motivation - (Savoy)
  22. Winston is at it again. Douchebag. And I'll add that I hope it brings more attention, positively, to Larry Ochs' wonderful playing.
  23. I've been buying records from Birka Jazz since they started as an online shop. It's a good place to go for Scandinavian stuff at reasonable prices. Their grading is solid, and the one mistake I encountered, they sent me another copy and told me to keep the defective one. No record shops do that in the States!
