Yeah, I am not sure where to put this behemoth! Too tall for even my oversize bookshelves. Beautiful book, and I like the quotes from contemporaneous reviews. I thought I had a pretty good handle on British jazz LPs (and the fine CD reissue programmes of 15 years ago), but quite a few of the titles in here are totally unfamiliar to me. And I also was surprised to see Jack repeating the internet error that Alan Shorter appears on "By Contact." He had nothing to do with that session. Surman plays cornet (in addition to reeds), and the record was originally supposed to come out on Turtle.

Yes, it is a different track. I have the Habiliment LP for (partly) that reason. Surprised Lord got this wrong but the Japanese LP is extremely rare, so he may have just assumed without hearing.

He was also a very good writer and in later years he championed my writing. That felt like real validation, since I never knew or met him. He was also a very fucked up individual. It would not shock me at all if he was abused as a young person, but I do not know. I feel empathy towards those whose lives he wrecked. I think one can hold the truths of his accomplishments and his terrible actions at the same time.

Denon, Baystate, Horo, Fluid, Victor, Soul Note is what I have for Max of that period. don't forget the two Bridgewater Brothers LPs... very nice Denon sessions in great sound.

I suppose as these are benefiting musician charities it's hard to completely mock Al (especially given the fact that COVID UBI here was pretty short-lived), but it is still goofy.

I don't think so -- maybe it was not on the tape that was sent to Rudy? Looks like all CD issues are without it too. The Japanese pressing is really nice and quiet, and the mix feels a bit hotter than what Milestone released. Would be nice to get a definitive version with all five tracks.

The Japanese LP swaps "Black Narcissus" in for "Out 'n In." So there's one more track that was recorded. In addition, the US RVG version trims a little off of each cut.
