  1. Ah, didn't know Carlos played with Mal. His album Radio Song is a scorcher!
  2. yeah, I haven't listened to that record in many years. In fact, upthread I seem to have spaced on owning it!
  3. Fair point. I think, however, that there is a tendency to equate the "local rhythm section" with amateurs, when we know that's not the case with Mal's collaborators on these dates.
  4. van der Capellen was a great bassist. Wish I'd been able to see him in person!
  5. True, though I'd argue that most of the players on those records already had or would soon develop very strong pedigrees on their own. Guy Hayat is probably the only sideman whose career seems a bit more obscure. Then again, he did play & make recordings with Bud Powell...
  6. cool. Maybe Patrice Caratini and Guy Hayat or a similar rhythm section. I'm sure it'll be an enjoyable set, whatever it is.
  7. oh yeah, I saw that. Pretty far out.
  8. absolutely true. As they used to say, records are a "sound" investment!
  9. yeah, it was awesome to see two of the candle paintings exhibited years ago... and I don't think Richter was as well-known when the album came out as he became, at least in America.
  10. absolutely iconic Gerhard Richter painting-as-cover image.
  11. If you have really choice items, find a shop or ebay seller who is trustworthy and does brisk business that will allow consignment. I know a few power sellers that offer this service.
  12. Originals have been collectible for a long time, but $10K is an obscene and stupid amount of money for a record that has been re-pressed numerous times, even as a vintage mono edition. I've certainly dropped coin on used records before but can't imagine going that crazy!
  13. I need to dig around and see when it was first credited to Dolphy; as far as I know, it is his tune.
  14. very nice album, well done. still need a perfect copy of the AMM if he has it!
  15. ah, thanks. Yeah, I will have to pick up the album. Very much enjoyed their version.
  16. yeah, had this conversation with a few bassists who say he died a long time ago due to substance use. This is of course part of the ever-evolving jazz mystery-history, so I cannot verify it with 100 percent accuracy.
  17. Ha, interesting cover by Pee Wee Russell. I assume it's credited to Dolphy here?
  18. True. My spreadsheet from the former editor and now NYT jazz obit writer of the NYC Jazz Record has him still living. I think it did come up in a conversation with a few old school Brooklyn jazz heads who believed he was still around but not musically active.
  19. just got my shipping notice a couple of days ago whilst traveling... I imagine they'll land soon.
  20. Thanks for bumping this -- I have the Japanese Victor LP which has a different running order than the original LP. I always assumed the alternate order had something to do with the tape transfer and side lengths, but it would be interesting if that was a revision specifically called for by the artist.
  21. good deals here. Someone should snap them up. I have two of the three and if my situation allowed it, would have three of three.
  22. Something is definitely a strong one. I like Bridge Over Troubled Water (arr. Masahiko Sato), By the Red Stream, and Head Rock quite well. Dosojin is one I picked up but need to spend more time with:
  23. Both. Counterfeits have been a thing for decades, although they're easier to document now. Alterations have also been made to later reissues and sometimes these are passed off as originals to undiscerning buyers. And I'm positive some fake hand-colored/hand-painted Sun Ras have been going around... in other words, stock older Ra LPs decorated recently by record sellers.
