I wish there was more recorded from that Rollins band other than 3 In Jazz and Our Man in Jazz. I've heard a Jazz Connoisseur bootleg but it was almost unlistenable in terms of poor recording quality.

I think Newport sets were really short. If you remember, the Joe Daley Trio LP on RCA was at least half studio music. Bill Dixon's group with Judith Dunn performed a 23-minute version of "Groundspeed" at Newport in '66, IIRC.

I'll be curious to know what you think. I forgot to mention Staatstheater, which I've only heard, and Match, which I used to really enjoy listening to when I played cello. Apparently Buell Neidlinger participated in a version up at Tanglewood.

True, but didn't Jimmy Carter give us disco? And Ak-Ba. I mean, the Arista stuff is great. It's not as confounding, to me, as Diamond Curtain Wall or something. But it's music that is still very challenging and gives up new rewards upon each spin. To paraphrase Bill Dixon, everything he did was all he could do at the time. And that's a lot of all.

Now that's a rare one...

Albert Ayler and Clyfford Still - two of my absolute favorite artists, irrespective of medium.

It doesn't seem like something I equate with the 7/4 listening queue, but I urge you to check out the DGG disc of "1898" and "Music for Renaissance Instruments." Acustica, Exotica, der Schall, Ludwig Van, even the early stuff like Transicion II and Improvisation Ajoutee are all worth checking out. I think Exotica and der Schall are particularly excellent.

Maybe I posted on this thread before, I don't know and am too lazy to look. I'll say the only BNs that I haven't kept were Hutcherson's Total Eclipse and a bunch of Jimmy Smiths. Everything else I've held onto, provided the vinyl wasn't wasted or whatever.

I'd always blown off that Strata East LP, but one can't deny the goodness of "Hopscotch."

A lot of the early works have since been given simpler alpha-numeric or numeric titles.

But with an interesting question.

Shit, that's terrible. I am a big fan of Kagel's work, especially the "theatrical" pieces from the early '70s and their attendant films. He will be missed!

Paul Smith, right. It's mentioned in the liners to the Simmons Arhoolie record that the drummer was working with Ayler. I don't know of recordings of this gig surfacing anywhere, but it would be interesting to hear with that rhythm section.

I'm a whiner, and I would rather spend my $50 on filling an FMP gap or buying a cool boxed set than re-buying a BN I already have in King, Liberty, or CD form. (said from my pile of money on a houseboat smoking reefer)

I hear you. Live/Dead is fantastic, kind of Amon Duul-y in a way. Allman Brothers kinda bore me. This Tyner disc would bore me, I'm sure, if I ever listened to it - which I won't.

Haven't heard the album, but I've read Braxton was a little pissed at the title -- and given the man's output, it is pretty absurd. It's a really nice set, and presents Braxton in various context. Hence the title, I guess.

Hell, maybe I'll have two copies... not to mention most of this on LP!
