  1. For me, the only Hill that holds up is Black Fire. Roy Haynes is astounding on this! As for Sam Rivers, his BNs don't hold up all that well for me, either. I do like Dimensions and Extensions; too bad it was unissued at the time!
  2. BNs first, then New Jazz, then Steeplechase... somewhere down the line I hit the first couple Mc's for a spin.
  3. I have seen a reference to Carson UPS-570 as its "original" catalog number. Carson also issued the AEC's Chi-Congo (originally on Decca). This is the only title on the Carson label I've actually held in my hands.
  4. I've got a nice maroon and silver DG mono of Herbie Mann at the Village Gate. Label is comparable to the black or seafoam green of US Atlantic in style, not (obviously) in hue. Sounds very good, especially for $4!
  5. And even Atomic has had several copies in the past few years... this one looks pretty nice, though.
  6. With you on the Clark and the others that you mention. Never been hugely impressed by the Don Byrd BNs, though strangely I enjoy the Transition material (what I have of it, anyway). Andrew Hill I find overrated in general, and the insane touting that his BNs get contributes to this. But to each their own. The Don Cherrys are good but he's done better, often with Swedes (though I do like the Durium). Mobley is probably overrated, but I like the sessions I have of his. Ditto Brooks - touted above and beyond, but the records are quite good in my opinion. And hell, Brooks wasn't touted enough at the time, so might as well overcompensate. This leads me to a question (maybe another thread): how highly rated were some of these guys at the time? Morgan, Mobley, etc. were obviously given a lot of due in the '60s, but what about figures like Duke Pearson?
  7. Always been more of a Mooney person myself, but I often get beaned for statements such as this.
  8. Rodan - Rusty (Quarterstick)
  9. I guess what I was asking was when did this orchestra convene? More than once, I assume? Looks like a '70s thing to me, but this is the first I've heard of it. I'm only familiar with the "Gittin' to Know Y'all" works recorded for MPS and at the 12th German Jazz Festival Frankfurt.
  10. Seam - The Problem With Me (Touch & Go)
  11. Wilber Morris - Wilber Force (DIW) w/ David Murray and Denis Charles Especially fine for the spoken introduction: "My name is Wilber Morris..."
  12. From what time period?
  13. I only know his work from the Misha Mengelberg Kwartet (ca. '64-'66), but enjoy his playing on those LPs. The VaraJazz set from '88 looks like it has potential also. Thanks for the reminder!
  14. How is that? I saw PJC has/had a copy.
  15. Had to do something with Bird Flu, IIRC.
  16. We'll see. Too early to be mentioning on the board, probably, but we'll see.
  17. Lots of things are good for ~ $5! Haven't spun that one in years, though. Will have to do so again soon!
  18. I was more impressed by the fact that she has quite a few Impulse Coltranes, and likes "Ascension."
  19. The program at UT listed him as Roney, and yet I knew it wasn't him. His name was not announced at the gig, or at least I didn't hear it.
  20. That's exactly why I was on the fence for many years. Having been given a copy of the new one and spun it a fair amount, I can say it's really very good. I'm pleased. Yes, she is quite the looker!
  21. I actually have only ever had two girlfriends that really disliked my collecting jones, and only one of those two ever denigrated the interest in music itself. Just started seeing someone who was very, very impressed by the size of my collection , and who (prior to knowing me) listens to quite a bit of Coltrane and Sun Ra. Hard to find these ones!
  22. Then again, my copy is a green-label issue called 1959...
  23. I do something similar with LPs, just slip them into their appropriate filing system on the shelf and hide or recycle the boxes. Nobody's the wiser!
  24. For whatever reason, I've not been able to get all that into the later Impulse LPs; even the Shandars, though pretty good, don't capture what I felt Ayler's music could do at that earlier, rawer stage. Even with Silva and Graves eddying about on Love Cry, it's not one of my favorites either.
