  1. Oh THAT one, yeah I remember that CD. It's always pretty cheap as an LP, though I've never bought it. Always preferred the small-group stuff, though with some proper guidance that could change. How's the Nonet on Atlantic?
  2. Tell us more about the book. When will it be available? It's a collection of interviews and artist's writings, all in English or translated into English, spanning Lacy's career and compiled by Jason Weiss. It's due in September from Duke University Press. I wrote a blurb on it for the August issue of AAJ-NY with a review online to follow shortly...
  3. I've enjoyed Snooze, on Choice, but not heard much beyond that. Happy Birthday. And her ex-husband is a heavy tenor player, fwiw...
  4. Both of those Uniteledis LPs are outstanding, just to reiterate... Anybody heard/have the Attica Blues Big Band on Blue Marge? It always looked pretty heavy, though the "original" Attica Blues was never my cup o' tea.
  5. There is a Base Italian pressing from the 80s, with the typical black-on-white Base logo. The original French pressing has a black label with orange graphics, cat. no. 28976 (September 28, 1976 recording date). The other Uniteledis Shepp, afaik, was not reissued by Base. Jef Gilson and Gerard Terrones both had something to do with the label, though I've always heard it was mostly Gilson's deal. The inner sleeves and pressings look more like Palm than Futura/Marge. Maybe brownie could shed some light?
  6. Rolf & Joachim Kuhn - Monday Morning (HorZu Black Label) great early '70s madness with Surman, Phillips, Martin, Thollot and Eje Thelin. I especially like how, in reverse of what's normal, the tunes start with relentless racket and end with lighthearted folk melodies!
  7. Well, it's been going on for years, they're all doped - even the domestiques at the back of the pack. Sacking Ullrich won't clean up the problem; nor would sacking bodybuilders who test positive for steroids. I personally think a safer type of performance-enhancing drug should be legalized and professional cycling can get on with its existence.
  8. Having Workman and Eddie Moore can't hurt...
  9. Force is a motherfucker, indeed. It originally came out on Uniteledis (France), a subsidiary of Palm. The other Shepp record in that series was Massy U-Jaama, a quintet which is also pretty nice.
  10. Sorta like how they did the Howard Riley Discussions reish...
  11. Just to nit-pick - a cover w/cut corner is NOt mint by definition. By eBay standards, it probably is...
  12. I've always wanted "Ghosts," but I suppose ESP isn't up on the ringtone scene.
  13. Great one! Anybody know what happened with the MPS/Saba reissue program? There are a number of things befitting the Funny Rat scene that I thought were coming out on CD, but haven't appeared.
  14. Enja was, for a time, a really great label. A lot of those are pretty hard to find, though the Mal records seem to crop up fairly regularly.
  15. That's what I hoped! I'll get a couple from Hiroshi next paycheck, methinks... Now if they'd just do Le Temps Fou!...
  16. Great post, Lazaro! Mal's passing was the first that really "hit" as a jazz fan (shows how young I am, I guess). Bummed me out.
  17. I dunno, Patrick seems like a mainstay to me... Boykins definitely did leave, though, and he was on a number of fine post-Ra LPs. He also wrote a great tune that's on Horace Parlan's Happy Frame of Mind, "Home is Africa."
  18. I always felt (and still do) they played excellently together, a perfectly complementary approach to shoring up the edges in free music. The Victor, America, Hat and Enjas are all excellent sessions. Reflections is good, too.
  19. Didn't he do one more "away" date--that 1970 album with Dizzy Reece? Yes. And iirc, there's a C. Jordan for muse with Pat Patrick on it, no?
  20. Despite the fact that my ex is a Cancer, I still have it for BJP. Happy belated!
  21. Happy Birthday Steve. Been reading that Conversations book a lot lately (pre-press proof); it's amazing.
  22. That's a great one! Got that and Preach Brother in Minneapolis, top condition NY, for $15 each... Strangely enough, the Elder Don was $40. Bought it anyway, of course...
  23. How are these? I saw Hiroshi has a few, and my CD's are scuffed to hell!
  24. Still got a day though... and I don't think it's that clean, either. I'll stick with my King, nevertheless.
