  1. incredible record
  2. Yes! Those Lipscomb records are fantastic. The Les Blank film is unreal as well.
  3. Absolutely! So many greats on Arhoolie and related sub-labels. He really did a service.
  4. Intakt for sure, from the very beginning.
  5. I know Doug. Really nice guy. Think he's semi-retired but I could be wrong about that.
  6. lovely album. Got it from Academy Records over 20 years ago now.
  7. Yup. I think a big part of Mosaic's model becoming narrower and narrower over time is what they can actually license. I'm all for some of the releases but it's getting to be less and less interesting. And yeah, Scott, Williams, and Allen for sure -- Redd and more Akiyoshi would be great too. But I don't see any of this happening.
  8. I wonder whether the reissues are legit? Original imprint was an educational project run by French socialists. The Shepps are, I think, the only jazz records they did.
  9. Awesome record -- the original sound isn't all that great, but it is HOT.
  10. Will definitely check this. Also enjoyed watching some footage on YouTube of Rodrigo Amado's new/ish group with von Schlippenbach, Flaten, Gerry Hemingway.
  11. yeah, all those Noord sessions are hot stuff. Glad you enjoyed the interview! Re: Hinze, he's in fantastic form on Dick van der Capellen's "The Present Is Past," released on Relax in 1967. https://www.discogs.com/release/7000631-Dick-Van-Der-Capellen-Trio-The-Present-Is-Past It's an excellent and little-known Dutch avant-garde jazz record. And I think the Mariano is good, too.
  12. yeah, good starter copy until you find one with the book and whatnot. Herbert was such a fun person to talk to. Wish I could've seen him live.
  13. nope, dunno the seller -- the record set is hard to find. Occasionally it pops up on google searches but not that often. Excellent album. I miss Herbert.
  14. Not sure if this is the copy for you, but if you can find a decent example of this set, it'll be well worth the change: https://organicmusic.jp/en/products/yonin-no-kai-developments-of-japanese-traditional-music-1 not on discogs.
  15. guessing games are fun. Keeps the brain active whereas having everything at your internet fingertips feels too easy.
  16. Really good article. It's a very special LP -- glad I got it when it was relatively cheap, but even more glad it's getting renewed attention.
  17. the Jazz Pour Tous jacket is what I thought the op meant -- some 60s OCORA LPs and earlier Barenreiter Musicaphon titles are like this. Common for, yes, getting the maximum amount of text and photos into a gatefold package. And the tipped-in liner notes do tend to come unglued over time. But those Charles Duvelle photos are well worth looking at, really fascinating.
  18. I'd think those later Earl Hooker LPs on Arhoolie would fit the bill. Hooker is weird and awesome.
  19. I have a vague memory of this. Then again, do any of us really understand what goes on here?
  20. Well, I'll definitely be at your next Bar Mitzvah!
  21. Yeah, I have that on LP -- it's a trip! Expanded Yamashita Trio with butoh dancers -- would've been a sight to see. If you like McPhee solo you'll enjoy this. It's beautiful.
  22. Wait, I know I've been at some of your NYC gigs! It must be because I am so short that my presence goes unnoticed.
  23. yeah, I've done the same -- cheap in the bins, and always good. The only ones I could not connect with were the Nonet albums but I could easily be convinced to try again!
  24. Damn, what an amazing life & person. RIP.
