I don't think Concord is really selling this to "us" anyway. Sure, if you're lucky enough to have a SO who could make a compilation with, like, Sunny Murray's rendition of "This Nearly Was Mine" (great!!!) or something, then it's unnecessary to buy these things. And yeah, most people don't really move on to the entire Miles Prestige collection after buying a PFL. But at least it's getting some good music out there - nothing on these collections is bad stuff, it's just not what we would choose. That's different. I bought my (now ex-) girlfriend Destination Out because I knew she would enjoy "Love and Hate," and that was the first of several jazz CDs she got in her collection. But the music on that Jackie Mc record is no better or worse than Coltrane's Ballads or even Brubeck and Desmond gettin' mellow. Yeah, I'd rather fuck to Archie Shepp, but that's me... just don't try and fuck to Trevor Watts. Trust me, it doesn't work.

I prefer liquor in my punch bowl, so if anybody can provide that, maybe we'll all enjoy Pavone's playing a little better! He's not the first person I think of in terms of contemporary bassist-composers (Barry Guy or Mark Dresser...), but he's still done some nice work. Shodo, which AFAIK is not on CD, is a very strong recording.

I don't know if I agree with that entirely - there are surface similarities, but like Monk, he is damn near impossible to imitate. I fail to see, for example, motivic similarities between Cecil and say, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Irene Schweizer or Matthew Shipp (admitting not as much familiarity with Shipp as with the others). Not just in terms of solos, either, but the way Cecil would feed structural fragments to Jimmy or Ramsey Ameen or Cyrille or Oxley is quite different than a lot of these other players work. But that's probably for another thread , I'd still like to see this film even though I don't have Comcast.

It's been a long time since I listened to those records - thanks for the reminder! IIRC, Tchicai and Dudu are the team on at least one of those... Dollar Brand/Abdullah Ibrahim is always kind of hit or miss - and apologies in advance for the diversion - but in addition to African Space Program, the duo with Dyani and Anatomy of a SA Village, all great records, I have buried somewhere a flyer for a Dollar Brand gig at NY's MoMA with Milford Graves, Walter Booker, Byard Lancaster and another horn player (can't remember who) in 1967 or '68. Pretty insane band, if you ask me... Dyani is one of my favorite bass players, hands down. I'll repeat that African Bass (Red Records) is mind-blowing.

I've heard great things about Orange. Only familiar with "old shit" on Alacra, not the new stuff so much.

I've passed on those Dudu records - I think they were on Caroline or Virgin originally - seemed to steer a bit too clear from the improvisational or 'free' aspects for my taste, something that always imbued BOB or Blue Notes or their ilk quite strongly. But I could be missing out, for sure... I suspected that the Feza on Ayler was necessary. Better hop to it - I think Cadence had copies not long ago, but I just find them irritating to deal with.

I'll probably get it just to have the "plus," though interestingly it's billed as an EP record rather than cooperatively... whatever. Still good to have it out again. If you think about it, it's 1/2 of the Nipples band.

Forgot all about that record - T. Watts and Howard Riley make up the rest of the band, so I'm sure it smokes. As far as Japo LPs go, I seem to recall it being one of the rarer (and pricier) ones... I'll keep a lookout.

Yeah, it was reissued, but the LP is still available here and there too. I got it from Downtown Music Gallery for like $20 sealed (I think they keep some Oguns in stock). It's just "okay," a bit too clean-sounding for my tastes and not in the way that the Neon is clean. Just my two cents, though! Downtown Music Gallery Website That concert from Traveling Somewhere was floating around some of the online fileshares a while back, and you could get the complete version of "Do It" that way. I've seen it on some Euro-jazz live concert trees. Cuneiform faded it so they wouldn't have to split the disc into two, I think. I really should nab the tune one of these days, but for now the fade will do...

That's what I had been hearing. It's hard to know who to give the benefit of the doubt to, other than Jaki... Sad story, whatever "actually" happened. The man's music is always completely honest and unique; he would've been a great person to meet. As a sidenote, what's Rudolph up to now? The Blue Humans stuff was something else.

Right. Agreed, but it is strong in parts. Several tracks reminiscient of the Dixon-Shepp band, ca. '62, which is often a good thing.

I'm still in the 12 percent group, even though I just had a birthday. One of the rare moments that I feel like I can calm down and that there is still time to get stuff done.
